Another day, another win for Waterford

Little League softball team takes state tournament opener

Durham — Lexi Collins pitched a complete game, striking out 11, as Waterford Little League softball (ages 10-12) won the first game of its state championsh­iop series — one night after capturing the Section 3 title — with a 3-0 victory over Windsor. Waterford will play a winner's bracket game at noon Saturday.

Grace Muti added a hit in the victory, Melanie Martin had an RBI single and Emilia Podeszwa had a two-run triple.

State Jr. League softball (13-14)

• Groton/Mystic/Pawcatuck defeated Killingly/Brooklyn 20-0 in the opening game of the state tournament in Orange. Katie Tuohy pitched a shutout over five innings, giving up two hits and striking out 11, while Sydney Lyon, Charlotte Cabral and Annalyn Cahill each contribute­d three hits.

State Sr. League softball (13-16)

• Amanda Cox was the winning pitcher and added two hits, a run and two RBI as Ledyard opened play in the state tournament Thursday with an 11-5 victory over Bristol. Shailynn Williams had two hits, walked and scored a run, Sara Cox had three hits, three RBI and a run scored, Abby Fowler had three hits, a walk, two runs scored and three RBI and Codee Carroll had four hits, three for extra bases, four runs scored and two RBI.

District 10 LL softball (8-10)

• Jillian Fugere pitched a complete game with 15 strikeouts and one walk, allowing just five hits, as Groton/Mystic beat Waterford 110 Thursday night to win the District 10 title. Fugere, Leilani McCoy and Mallory Bogle each had two hits and Jaedyn Steffens led the way with three runs scored for Groton/Mystic, which advanced to the state Section 3 tournament which begins Monday at Durham. Audra Fiano led Waterford with two hits.

District 10 LL baseball (10-12)

• East Lyme advanced to the championsh­ip round with a 4-3 victory over Waterford in the losers' bracket final. East Lyme will meet Mystic at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Calvin Burrows Field in Groton. A second game, should East Lyme win Sunday, would be played at 5:30 p.m. Monday. AJ Montejano had two doubles and Ben Quagan one for East Lyme and Chris Cambi pitched five shutout innings in relief.

• Trailing by a run, Waterford scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to beat Pawcatuck 9-8 in a losers' bracket game Thursday night. Tito Kiefer had two hits and three RBI in the win, Remy Coderre reached base three times, including a double, with two runs scored and an RBI, Brady Sutman had a double, two runs scored and two RBI and Lucas Saunders came on to pitch, recording the last five outs to earn the victory. Camden Ogden had two doubles, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI and Nick Cannella had a single, double and two RBI.
