FUNDRAISER PLANNED FOR MAN ATTACKED BY TENANT IN MAY

-

Uncasville — A benefit dinner has been planned for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Golden Palace for a man attacked by a tenant he was evicting in May.

Mohegan Sun and several other area organizations and businesses have donated raffle items for it, and tickets are $10 each.

Johnny Luong, a longtime employee of Mohegan Sun, sustained serious head injuries when he was attacked May 4 by Emanuel Neri, who then was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace. According to court documents, Luong had been in the process of evicting Neri for not paying rent and being disruptive, and Neri had gone after Luong before, telling police that if he saw Luong on the street, he would “(expletive) him up.”

Luong’s wife, Kitty, was eight months pregnant when her husband was left in the middle of the intersection of 14th and Prospect streets in Norwich, drifting in and out of consciousness and bleeding from the mouth, ears and back of the head. Ceci Iliff, who worked with Luong, set up a baby shower for the family at the end of May, and fellow coworker Jackie Cryer, who is organizing Tuesday’s benefit, said baby boy Anh Minh was born on June 7. They will attend the benefit event.

Cryer set up a GoFundMe account to support the family that as of Friday has raised nearly $14,000 of the $15,000 goal. She said Luong is undergoing rehabilitation at Gaylord Hospital in Wallingford, recovering from the brain trauma sustained in the attack and subsequent strokes.
