Ledyard wins Senior SB states

Orange — Ledyard rolled to the Senior League (ages 13-16) softball state title with a 15-5 win over Bristol on Sunday night, winning the mercy-rule game in five innings.

The District 10 champions advance to the Eastern Regional tournament in Worcester, Mass., which begins on Saturday. Ledyard went 2-0 in the three-team tournament.

Codee Carroll led the offense with four hits and six RBI, Mary Creekmore had four hits and scored four runs and winning pitcher Amanda Cox had three hits and drove in two runs. Gracie Sajkowicz had three hits and scored three times and Abby Fowler had two hits and drove in three runs for Ledyard.

Local golf

• Four area golfers advanced to the second day in the Connecticu­t Senior Open at Shennecoss­ett Golf Course.

Waterford's Kevin Shea shot a 2-overpar 73 and stands in a tie for 21st place. Also moving on were former NFA standout John Elliott (74), David Jones of Norwich (76) and Bill Hermanson of East Lyme (76). Robin Byrd of Florida has a two-stroke lead after shooting a 6-under-par 65.

NECBL

• The North Adams SteepleCat­s scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning and went on to beat the Mystic Schooners 6-2 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game. TT Bowens (Central Connecticu­t), Steven Barmakian (George Washington) and James Taylor Jr. (Georgia Tech) had two hits each for Mystic (1713). Schooners starter Trey McLoughlin (Fairfield) gave up five hits and one run over six innings with six strikeouts and no walks.

The Schooners lost to the Newport Gulls 12-9 on Sunday night. Bowens, the former Montville High standout, homered twice and drove in four runs. He has 10 homers this season.

American Legion

• Norwich beat Waterford 5-4 in a Zone 6 game on Sunday. Daniel Eggler had two hits and Ryan King drove in two runs for Norwich (11-11). Elijah Martinez had three hits, Ryan Bakken drove in three runs and Payton Sutman had two hits for Waterford (17-6).

Junior Legion

• Nathan Licitra pitched a four-hitter as Niantic beat Willimanti­c 1-0 in a Zone 6 game. Licitra struck out nine with no walks and Ashton Fontaine and Marcus Orsini had the only hits for Niantic (13-5), which scored an unearned run. Kadin Ducot pitched a two-hitter for Willimanti­c (16-2).

• Bryce Bedard pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Panera Pirates beat the Three Rivers Sonics 8-0 in an Eastern Connecticu­t Major League game. Pieter Khoury and Ken Olszewski homered for the Pirates. Eric Javor had two hits and scored twice, Sean Connelly had two hits, Bedard was 3-for-3 with a double and Olszewski had two hits and two RBI for the Pirates. Aaron Beeney had the hit for Three Rivers.

State LL softball (10-12)

• Waterford's season came to an end with a 10-0 loss to Milford in the Section 3 tournament at Durham. The game ended after four innings on a mercy rule.

State LL softball (8-10)

• Host Preston/Jewett City beat Stafford 15-0 in three innings in the Section 4 opener. Alexia Lemmon pitched three perfect innings and Isabella Trask hit an inside-the-park for the District 11 champions.
