Schooners fall to Sanford Mainers

Groton — UConn players Ben Maycock and Will Lucas homered for Mystic, but the Schooners lost to the Sanford Mainers 9-6 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game on Wednesday night.

Sanford scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning to rally for the win. Mystic (18-17-1) scored five runs in the bottom of fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Lucas hit a three-run homer and Maycock capped the inning with a two-run shot. Lucas, Maycock and Isaiah Byars (Alabama) had two hits each for the Schooners.

Senior softball (13-16)

• Ledyard's season ended with a 7-5 loss to New Jersey in the quarterfin­als of the Northeast Regional tournament in Worcester, Mass. Samantha Marcotte had a two-run double, Amanda Cox and Sara Cox each had two hits and an RBI and Codee Carroll had two hits and scored a run for Ledyard.

LL softball (8-10)

• Groton/Mystic beat Monroe in the losers' bracket final in the state tournament at Mansfield. The District 10 champions play unbeaten Wallingfor­d in the championsh­ip round today at 5:30 p.m. A win by Groton/Mystic would force a deciding game on Friday. Wallingfor­d beat Groton/Mystic 1-0 on Tuesday.

Groton/Mystic scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and added four more runs in the sixth. Jillian Fugere pitched a six-hitter for the win, striking out nine with no walks. Jaedyn Steffens had three hits and scored two runs, Fugere drove in four runs and Leilani McCoy, Mallory Bogle and Isabel Southers had two hits each for Groton/Mystic.

New York-Penn League

• The Connecticu­t Tigers lost to the Staten Island Yankees 3-1. Andrew Navigato had two hits and Gresuan Silverio doubled for the Tigers (17-21), who also lost to the Yankees 3-2 on Tuesday night. Riley Greene and Ryan Kreidler had doubles for the Tigers on Tuesday.

UConn men's hockey

• UConn head coach Mike Cavanaugh announced the addition of four student-athletes to round out this year's incoming freshmen class. Goaltender Ryan Keane (Lewisville, Texas) is joined by defensemen Jacob Flynn (Bridgewate­r, Mass.), Yan Kuznetsov (Murmansk, Russia) and Harrison Rees (Oakville, Ontario) in the group.

Flynn concluded his high school career at Thayer Academy and had a career-high seven goals and 23 points in 28 games. Keane spent the past two seasons in the NAHL, playing in 36 games with the Jamestown Rebels and finishing second in the league with a 1.81 goals against average. Kuznetsov played last season in the USHL with the Sioux Falls Stampede and Rees played the last two seasons with North York of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL).

They join Carter Berger, Matej Blümel, Vladislav Firstov and Eric Linell in the incoming class.
