Mystic Schooners clinch berth in NECBL playoffs.

Hartford, Vt. — The Mystic Schooners clinched a spot in the New England Collegiate Baseball League playoffs with a 10-1 win over the Upper Valley Nighthawks in the first game of a doublehead­er on Wednesday.

Mystic (22-20) lost the second game 3-2. The Schooners will play in a wild-card playoff game on Saturday.

UConn teammates Ben Maycock and Will Lucas each had two-run singles in a five-run fourth inning for the Schooners in the opener. Montville's TT Bowens (Central Connecticu­t), Nolan Kessinger (UMass) and Maycock had two hits each, Lucas drove in four runs, Maycock drove in two runs and Steve Barmakian (George Washington), David Beam (East Tennessee) and Bowens each scored twice.

Tyler Schoff (Bryant) was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and one run over six innings with six strikeouts and no walks.

In Game 2, the Schooners were held to two hits and scored both of their runs in the top of the seventh inning. Josh Maguire (Maryland) doubled home a run, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball.

College cross country

• Greg Roy, the men's cross country coach at UConn for the past 35 years, will oversee the men's and women's cross country programs this fall, athletic director David Benedict announced. Roy has led the Huskies to 15 conference titles and has coached 36 All-Americans during his tenure.

"A combined program is commonplac­e in collegiate track and will provide our student-athletes with greater expertise and more specialize­d coaching in event areas and also allow for more efficient travel and scheduling," Benedict said in a release. "Most importantl­y, it will strengthen the bond that already exists within the two programs as they will train and compete together."

New York-Penn League

• The Connecticu­t Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and went on to beat the Williamspo­rt Crosscutte­rs 3-2 on Tuesday. Kona Quiggle's RBI single tied the game at 2-2 and Hector Martinez's RBI single gave the Tigers their first lead of the game. Bryce Tassin got the final four outs and the win, striking out two. Corey Joyce was 2-for-3 for the Tigers (20-23).

• The Three Rivers Sonics beat Groton 8-2 in an Eastern Connecticu­t Major League game on Tuesday. Saxon Herbert hit a two-run homer, Aaron Beeney tripled and Tyler Rokowski, Juan Cruz and Joe Hajj had two hits each for the Sonics (6-4). Mike Doran homered and Robert Lee had two hits for Groton (1-7).

Sailing

• The 18th annual Red Lobdell Regatta was held on July 27 at the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club. Winners from the event were Kim Waller (Sunfish), Marc Jacobi (Aero's), Woody and Charlie Bergendahl (Idea 18's), Stephen Schwartz (Watch Hill 15's), Tom O'Connell (spinnaker) and Barnaby Blatch (cruising canvas).
