Waterford's Elijah Martinez named Zone 6 Legion MVP

Waterford infielder Elijah Martinez has been named Most Valuable Player of the 2019 American Legion Zone 6 baseball season.

Martinez helped lead Waterford to the championsh­ip round of the Connecticu­t Northern Division Super Regional before losing to Southingto­n.

Martinez was joined on the Zone VI all-star first team by teammate Ryan Bakken, a pitcher.

Also named to the first team were catcher Evan Zanauskas (Tri-Town), first baseman Ryan King (Norwich), middle infielders Martinez, George Etzel (Jewett City) and Chris Malcom (Niantic), third baseman Luke Mathewson (Tri-Town), outfielder­s Tyler Cournoyer (Danielson), Alex Fraser (Niantic) and Kevin Pomroy (Norwich), pitchers Bakken, Bryce Mileski (Jewett City) and Mitchel Barylski (Tri-Town) and utility Riley Burke (Norwich).

Mileski was also named winner of the Outstandin­g Pitcher award while Tri-Town's Jason Akana was named Coach of the Year.

All-star reserves were Ben Jerome (Waterford), Jacob Tarryk (Danielson), Daniel Eggler (Norwich), Ethan Preston (Danielson), Liam Milewski (Niantic) and Ron Losacano (Niantic), while the Sportsmans­hip Award winners were Jacob Jones (Danielson), Derek Taylor (Jewett City), Noah Smith (Ledyard/Pawcatuck), Cole Lafleche (Moosup), Joey Grubb (Niantic), Becker Bordeau (Norwich), Kobe Akana (Tri-Town), Bob Silva (Waterford) and John Boutin (Willimanti­c).

• The Batavia Muckdogs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a 6-5 win over the Connecticu­t Tigers on Friday night. Trailing 3-0, Kingston Liniak had a two-run double for the Tigers in the top of the fifth inning. The Tigers took a 5-4 lead with three runs in the top of the sixth. Hector Martinez had a two-run double and Eric De La Rosa doubled home the go-ahead run. Liniak was 3-for-5 and Jose King, Martinez and De La Rosa had two hits each for the Tigers (20-26).
