Connecticut Sun to honor Whalen on Aug. 23
Ceremony will be held prior to game on Aug. 23
Mohegan — The Connecticut Sun will celebrate the career of WNBA legend and former Sun player Lindsay Whalen on Aug. 23 when they take on the Las Vegas Aces.
Whalen's No. 13 will join those of Margo Dydek (12), Nykesha Sales (42) and Katie Douglas (23) in the rafters during a special ceremony at halftime of the game, which is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Whalen, who led the Sun to their two WNBA Finals appearances in 2004 and 2005, will also participate in a special question and answer session, moderated by LaChina Robinson, after the ceremony on court. Joining Whalen will be former teammates Douglas and Sales.
Selected by the Sun with the fourth overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft, Whalen spent six seasons in Connecticut before being traded to the Minnesota Lynx prior to the 2010 season. With the Sun, Whalen played in 197 games, scoring 2,290 points. Her 964 assists in a Sun uniform leads the Connecticut record books by more than 200.
"Lindsay Whalen is a legend, one of the greatest point guards and competitors to ever step on the court," said Amber Cox, Vice President of Sports at Mohegan Sun. "She was not only instrumental in leading the Sun to two appearances in the WNBA Finals, but she put professional women's basketball on the map in Connecticut. She helped establish one of the most loyal fan bases in the WNBA, many of whom are still a part of the Sun family today. We're excited to welcome her back to where her pro career started so our Sun family can celebrate all she's meant to our franchise."
Whalen is the winningest player in WNBA history, playing on a winning team in 325 WNBA regular season games. Her 2,348 assists ranks third in WNBA history. She won four WNBA championships during her career and was a five time All-WNBA honoree. With USA Basketball, she won two Olympic gold medals (2012, 2016) and two World Championship gold medals (2010, 2014). Whalen, now retired from the WNBA, is the head women's basketball coach at her alma mater, the University of Minnesota.
Black Wolves sign Reid
The New England Black Wolves signed veteran defenseman Creighton Reid to a two-year contract. Per team policy, no details were released.
Reid has seen action in 159 games over a 10-year National Lacrosse League career. During the 2018-19 season with the Toronto Rock he had six points on three goals and three assists along with 55 loose balls and 18 caused turnovers in 18 games.
"We are excited to add Creighton to our back end," Black Wolves general manager Rich Lisk said in a released statement. "He brings a veteran presence, high lacrosse IQ and steady defense . ... Creighton will be a perfect complement to our transition game and add another important piece toward bringing a championship to New England."
New York-Penn League
• The New York-Penn League game between the Connecticut Tigers and Hudson Valley Renegades was postponed Wednesday due to wet grounds from a heavy pregame storm at Dodd Stadium. Any ticket to the game can be exchanged at the Dodd Stadium box office for a ticket of equal or lesser value for any remaining home game in the 2019 season. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m. Thursday.
On Tuesday, Kedier Montero pitched six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts for his first win as the Tigers beat the Tri-City ValleyCats 2-0. Montero has struck out 15 and allowed no runs through 11 innings for the Tigers (27-30). Eleiezer Alfonzo had two of Connecticut's three hits, including an RBI double.
