A heaping helping of Hamburg

- — Kristina Dorsey

If it’s mid-August, it must be time for the Hamburg Fair. And, lo, it is, so fair fans can rejoice. This quaint, homespun event runs Friday through Sunday at the fairgrounds in Lyme. As always, there will exhibitions and competitions in ag-centric areas such as animals, fruits and vegetables. The horse pull begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with the ox pull at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Music has become a huge part of the Hamburg Fair, as this year’s schedule attests. The Music Now/ Nightingale’s Showcase, which features “emerging young artists” from the region, runs form 1 to 5:45 p.m. Saturday, and A Completely Different Note, an a cappella singing group from UConn featuring “The Voice” alum Braiden Sunshine, follows from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday features The Pickin’ Party, which is described as “an all-inclusive musical experience where participants play and sing together as a group regardless of level of ability.”

And don’t forget that midway rides will be spinning and spiraling anyone who wants to clamber onboard.

Worth noting: Proceeds from the fair help fund the Grange Association, Lyme Food Bank, Lyme Fire Association and Lyme Ambulance Association.
