Huskies, Irish extend series

Storrs — UConn announced Thursday it has scheduled four future women's basketball games against Notre Dame, extending one of the game's best collegiate rivalries.

The announcement means the two schools are locked in as opponents through the 2023-24 season.

The Huskies will travel to Notre Dame during the 2020-21 and 202223 seasons while the Irish will visit Connecticut in 2021-22 and 2023-24.

The final contracted game between the two programs will be played this season on Dec. 8 at Gampel Pavilion.

The two teams split a pair of games last season. UConn defeated the Irish 89-71 during the regular season before Notre Dame defeated the Huskies 81-76 at the NCAA Final Four in Tampa, Fla.

Coach Beams Scholarship

• Four student-athletes were recently awarded $500 scholarships from the Coach Beams Fund Scholarship committee: football players Shane Brooks (New London) and Stephen Sims (Griswold), and softball players Emily Nelson (St. Bernard) and Emily Meluch (Our Lady of Lourdes in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).

The awards are given in memory of Dick Beams, who coached at the high school level for 46 years in New York and Connecticut.

After retiring from Arlington High School (N.Y.) in 2000, he continued to coach football at East Lyme, St. Bernard and Bacon Academy, softball at East Lyme and basketball at New London.

Tigers win 1-0

• Marco Jimenez pitched five scoreless innings with one hit, striking out four and walking one, to give the Connecticut Tigers a 1-0, five-inning victory over the Brooklyn Cyclones in the first game of what was scheduled as a New York-Penn League doubleheader.

The second game was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up as part of a doubleheader with the Cyclones beginning at 4:35 p.m. Friday.

In the opener, Jordan Verdondrove in the lone run of the game for the Tigers on an RBI double down the firstbase line to score Nick Quintana.
