CGA women roll in opener

Canton, N.Y. — Emma Puddington had 12 points and 11 rebounds, the first double-double of her career, as Coast Guard Academy opened its women's basketball season with a 91-46 victory over SUNY Canton in the opening round of the Kevin Fee/Roos Classic on Friday night.

The Bears will play SUNY Potsdam, a 77-62 winner over Cazenovia, in Saturday's championsh­ip game at 3 p.m.

Kyra Hartman led Coast Guard with 17 points and was one of five Bears to score in double figures. The 45-point margin of victory was the second largest in a season opener in program history. The Bears beat Wheelock 87-31 to open the 2010-11 season.

Hartman was 7 of 11 from the field, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Freshman Jacqueline Ward and Branyelle Carillo each scored in double figures in their collegiate debuts as Ward finished with 16 points and game-highs of seven assists and five steals while Carillo added 12 points.

Annabella Farabaugh added 15 points while freshman Faith Butler had eight rebounds and four steals.

This game was never in doubt after the Bears opened the game with a 12-0 run. They led 21-5 after one quarter and 43-19 at the half.

College volleyball

• Top-seeded Eastern Nazarene survived an upset bid by No. 4 Mitchell college with a 3-2 win in the semifinals of the New England Collegiate Conference tournament. Game scores were 19-25, 2520, 25-15, 22-25 and 15-12. Cameron Childs had 33 digs and Olivia DeLoach added 25 digs for the Mariners, who finish 14-12, while Lexi Hubbard had 30 assists and Claire Binfield added 18 assists.

College field hockey

• Maddy Wray had one goal and one assist as top-seeded UConn defeated No. 4 Providence 2-0 in the semifinals of the Big East tournament at Quinnipiac. The Huskies (17-3) will play No. 2 Old Dominion, a 3-1 winner over No. 3 Liberty, in Sunday's final at 1 p.m.
