Ledyard advances to Class M quarters in boys' soccer

Willimanti­c — Nick Washington scored in the 63rd minute as No. 12 Ledyard edged No. 5 Windham 1-0 in the second round of the CIAC Class M boys' soccer tournament on Wednesday.

Ledyard (14-5) plays at No. 4 Woodland in Friday's quarterfin­als at 2 p.m. The Hawks beat No. 13 Northweste­rn Regional in overtime, 3-2, in its second-round game.

Windham (16-2-2), the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division II champions, suffered its only two losses of the season to Ledyard — falling 6-0 on Sept. 26.

Washington took a pass from Daimon Pollard and beat three players along the goal line before putting the ball inside the far post. The Colonels survived a scare when Windham's Alfonso Vazquez, the state's career scoring leader, hit the crossbar with 45 seconds left in the game.

In other games: • Tyler Fidrych had three goals and Sam Montalto scored twice as second-seeded Stonington thumped No. 15 Wolcott, 5-0, in a Class M second-round game. William Sawin had two assists and Elias Dahl added another for the Bears (15-0-3), which will host No. 7 Abbott Tech in Friday's quarterfin­als. Abbott beat Tolland, 5-2, in its second-round game.

• Jesper Silberberg had a goal and an assist and scored for No. 23 Old Lyme as it knocked off No. 7 Hale-Ray, 3-1, in a Class S second-round game. Angus Tresnan and Mike Milazzo both scored and Ryan Tetreault had eight saves for the Wildcats (8-6-4), which will play at No. 11 Immaculate in Friday's quarterfin­als at 2 p.m.

• Fitch's season ended in the second round of the Class L tournament in the same painful way the Falcons lost the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference championsh­ip game: on penalty kicks. No. 12 Pomperaug converted all five of its penalty kicks and earned a 1-1 (5-3) win at Poquonnock Plains Park. Sebastian Duffy scored midway through the first half for the No. 5 Falcons (13-4-1), who trailed 1-0 at the time.

H.S. girls' volleyball

• Ryleigh Gonyo had 19 kills, 11 digs and four aces No. 11 Waterford swept No. 6 Amistad 28-26, 25-14, 25-11 in a Class M second-round match. Sabrina Kobyluck had 31 assists, Briana Muckle had 14 digs and four aces, and Rachel Miller had 11 digs and six kills for Waterford (19-5), which will play No. 3 Nonnewaug at Woodbury Middle School in Friday night's quarterfin­als at 6. The Chiefs beat No. 19 Berlin in four games in its second-round match.

• Ledyard's season came to an end with a 25-10, 25-20, 25-13 loss to No. 1 Seymour in the second round of the

Class M tournament. Marisa Howard had six kills, Ayanna Wiltshire had five kills, Codee Carroll had nine digs, Kira Kassim had four aces and five kills and Hannah Avila had 18 assists and seven digs for No. 16 Ledyard (1112). Seymour is the defending Class M champion.

H.S. girls' diving

• Anna Johnson of East Lyme finished 11th in the Class M meet at Bulkeley High School in Hartford. Johnson's score was 254.55. Emma Gravgaard of Brookfield won with a score of 448.25.

Men's basketball

• Chris Manon scored 19 and Derrius Ward 17 as St. Thomas More downed Rocktop Academy, 107-67. Jared Garcia had 10 rebounds for St. Thomas More (2-0).

• Coast Guard rallied from a onepoint halftime deficit to beat Salve

Regina 91-78. Noah Baldez led the Bears with 15 points and nine assists. Packy Witkowski had 18 points, Justin Kane scored 14, J.T. Cox had eight rebounds and Garrett Drummond came off the bench for 12 points for Coast Guard (1-1).

• Avery Point lost to the Mitchell College JV team, 80-78. Tyler Zegray led the Pointers (1-3) with 21 points and teammates Trevor Yeomans of Waterford (15), John Domijan of Montville (14) and J.R. Gandenberg­er of East Lyme (13) also scored in double figures.

Women's basketball

• Mitchell College opened its season with an 88-83 loss to Johnson & Wales on Tuesday night. Amina Wiley led the Mariners with 25 points and 15 rebounds and teammates Sam McKenna (21), Kelsey Hernandez (14) and Le'Sandra Turner (13) also scored in double figures.
