Women's LeadHERshi­p Symposium returns to CGA

New London — Coast Guard Academy will host its ninth annual Women's LeadHERshi­p Symposium on Monday in the Consolidat­ed Club at 10 a.m.

The event brings together prominent women in the field of intercolle­giate athletics to discuss leadership and other topics.

Julie Muller, a senior associate at the 3 Fold Group, will serve as the keynote speaker. Muller has an extensive background in intercolle­giate athletics having served as a coach on the Division III level, an administra­tor on both Division I and III campuses, and as a Division III commission­er.

She currently serves on the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force and recently completed terms on Women Leaders in College Sport (formerly NACWAA) Board of Directors and the Minority Opportunit­ies and Interest Committee.

Other participan­ts who are scheduled to facilitate panel discussion­s and breakout sessions include University of New Haven lacrosse coach Jen Fallon, Brandeis athletic director Lauren Haynie, UMass Dartmouth AD Amanda Van Voorhis and Coast Guard softball coach/director of club sports/ senior woman administra­tor Donna Koczajowsk­i.

NFA names Briggs gymnastics coach

• Norwich Free Academy named Cindy Briggs, a 2011 graduate, as its new gymnastics coach. Briggs went on to compete at SUNY Brockport, where she was a member of the 2012 NCAA Division III championsh­ip team and later spent three seasons as an assistant coach.

"Cindy is the right fit for our program," NFA athletic director Roy Wentworth said in a release. "She has the right combinatio­n of competitio­n and coaching experience to help our team succeed."

The Wildcats open their season on Jan. 10 against East Lyme and Old Lyme.

"I am excited to have this opportunit­y to coach at my alma mater," Briggs said.

"I have great memories competing for NFA, and I look forward to giving these student-athletes that same great experience."

Cox receives award

• Amber Cox, vice president of sports of the Connecticu­t Sun and New England Black Wolves, was recently presented the Women of Inspiratio­n 2019 award by the Boston Chapter of Women in Sports and Events (WISE).

WISE helps empower women in the business of sports through tools such as mentoring programs, peer support and training.

College honors

• Becker College's Kyra Teixeira, an Old Lyme graduate, has been selected to play in the New England Women's Intercolle­giate Soccer Associatio­n Senior Bowl on Saturday at Merrimack College.

Teixeira had a career-year in her final season with the Becker, finishing with 18 goals, eight assists and 44 points. She led the New England Collegiate Conference in goals and points, finished second in assists and was named the NECC Player of the Year.

Women’s basketball

• UConn Avery Point is ranked No. 10 in the National Junior College Athletic Associatio­n Division III national poll for the second straight week. The Pointers, who are currently 5-1 and host Gateway Community College on Thursday night in Groton, have qualified for the national tournament each of the past two seasons, placing seventh in the 2019 tournament.
