Montville wrestlers pin way past Waterford

Waterford — Montville recorded six pins and rolled to a 51-21 wrestling victory over Waterford on Wednesday night.

Sawyer Kury (145), Brandon Pederson (152), Ioanni Cobena (170), Frank Cook (195), Zach Doiron (22) and Somuadina Agunyego (285) all won by fall for the Indians (8-2), Cook posting the fastest of the night in 39 seconds.

Mason Concascia (126) and Jackson Harshberge­r (182) had pins for the Lancers (6-7).

Girls' basketball

• Addie Hauptmann had 21 points and Molly Butremovic scored 20 as Wheeler beat Norwich Tech 63-26 in a nonleague game. Wheeler (7-3) led 25-5 at halftime. Geovanna Taitague scored six and Ashlyn Bill blocked seven shots for Norwich Tech (6-6).

• Watkinson overcame an early five-point deficit to beat Williams School 37-32. Olivia Kaplan scored 16 points to lead the Blues (1-5) and Mary Surprenant added nine.

Boys' basketball

• Lukas Jones and Scott Pion scored 15 points each as Wheeler beat Norwich Tech 55-19 in a nonleague game. Ian Spracklin scored 12 and Bowen Baker had eight rebounds, five assists and five steals for Wheeler (4-4). Norwich Tech is 1-8.

• Waterford outscored Plainfield 24-12 in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 73-47 win. Ryan O'Connell had 12 points and seven rebounds, Owen Coderre scored 12, Sam Menders had nine points and 11 rebounds, Liam Kane scored 11 and Trevor D'Amico had 10 points for Waterford (3-5).

Men's basketball

• Mitchell College lost to Becker 78-64 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Marvin Baker scored 10 and had nine rebounds, Leonard Williams had 14 points, Matt Finke scored 12 and Alfonzo Stokes scored 10 for Mitchell (4-11, 1-1).

• St. Thomas More defeated NBA Africa 83-76 in an exhibition game. NBA Africa was represente­d by nine different African countries. Zeke Blauner led the Chancellor­s, who host their annual Founder's tournament on Friday and Saturday, with 23 points while Jared Garcia added 19, Dee Oluwadadil­ola 14 and Keigo Kimura 11.

• Coast Guard Academy lost to No. 17 Babson in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game, 94-92 in overtime. Tyler Perez had 23 points and eight rebounds, Noah Baldez scored 20, Sean Graytok had 10 points and Justin Kane scored nine with 11 rebounds for Coast Guard (5-8, 0-3).

College honors

• UConn Avery Point's Abby Stone, a freshman from Old Lyme, was named NJCAA Division III Player of the Week. Stone averaged 28.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 4.0 steals per game in a four games for the Pointers and was named to the all-tournament team at the North Country Community College Invitation­al.

H.S. indoor track

• The Fitch boys won a pair of relay events to finish third with 52 points at the Snowflake Invitation­al on Tuesday night at Wesleyan University. Ethan Mojica, Jacob Bendick, Keshav Garcia-Patel and Thomas Williams teamed up to win the 4x200-meter relay in 1:36.99, while Williams, Orlando Galarza, Alex DelCampo and Om Patel captured the 4x400 relay in 3:45.92. The Falcons added seconds from Bendick in the 55 dash (6.89) and Noah Brown in the shot put (38 feet, 9 inches), while Mojica was third in the 55 (6.96), Galarza was fourth in the long jump (19-10) and Trae Johnson was fourth in the shot (38-3).

Ledyard was fourth with 42 points, collecting second-place finishes from Mitchell Ahlborn in the high jump (5-8), Robbie Petriel in the long jump (20-0) and the 4x200 relay team of Ben Askew, Petriel, Nick Washington and Alex Warmus (1:38.11). Elijah McFerrin was third in the shot (38-4), Simon Reichart was fifth in the 600 (1:29.34), Nick Johanson was sixth in the 1000 (2:48.48) and Ben Berlin was sixth in the shot (38-0). Ledyard also got fourth-place finishes in the 4x800 with Blake McLeod, Owen Lessing, Jacob Roediger and Chris Houdeshell (10:11.97) and the spring medley relay with Solaiman Chowdhury, Washington, Warmus and Reihcart (3:59.65).

• In the girls' meet, Ledyard placed fourth with 31 points. The Colonels got second-place finishes from Olivia Crawford in the 55 hurdles (9.44) and the 4x800 relay team of Reanna Robbins, Sarah Bailey, Tori Schweitzer and Katelyn English at 11:25.14. The 4x200 team of Hannah Avila, Jessica Vajdos, Teia Lee and Aaliyah Amidon was third at 1:55.92. Lexi LaPerle was fourth in the 600 (1:47.96) and teamed with Lee, Crawford and Katherine Harren for a fourth-place finish in the sprint medley relay (4:44.91) with Nadia Helme placing sixth in the 55 dash (7.82).

Fitch was ninth with 20 points as its 4x800 relay team of Ava Paprocki, Paige Pollard, Kelsi Ursini and Kathryn Barnes won the event in 11:04.31, while Abby Rodgers was fourth in the 300 (45.55).
