Stonington’s Hammond wins mile run at East Coast Invite

Providence — Stonington senior Rhys Hammond won the mile run on Saturday at the East Coast Invitation­al indoor track meet.

Hammond, who finished with a time of 4:24.80, earned an invitation to the prestigiou­s New Balance Indoor Grand Prix next weekend in Boston. He was also named outstandin­g distance runner at the event, which also including winning the sprint medley relay with teammates Christian Hudson, Andrew Castagliuo­lo and Chase Flynn on Friday.

Boys' basketball

• Waterford's rally fell short in a 56-51 loss to Immaculate in a nonleague game. Immaculate (8-1) led 45-33 after three quarters. Ryan O'Connell had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Trevor D'Amico scored 11, Robby Zawacki had eight rebounds and Owen Coderre had seven rebounds for Waterford (4-6).

• Grasso Tech lost to Hale-Ray 8574 in a nonleague game on Friday night. Jose Hernandez had 18 points, Tyrell Dennis and Donnel Brown scored 17 each and Domonic Martinez scored 12 for Grasso (3-6).

Girls' basketball

• Charlotte Carney had 16 points, nine rebounds, seven blocked shots and four steals as Fitch beat Stonington 41-39 in an ECC Division II game. The Falcons are 8-4, 3-2. Sophia Fernholz scored 11, Zoe Ribeiro had 10 points, Sophia Bell had 19 rebounds and Olivia Fustini had 11 rebounds for Stonington (4-6, 1-4). Stonington lost to Windham 52-37 on Friday night. Bell had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Ribeiro scored 11.

• Ledyard lost to Killingly 45-36. Tallie Williams had nine points and 10 rebounds for Ledyard (1-9).

Wrestling

• Connor Doran (113 pounds) and Caden Foote (145) both won all three of their matches by pin as Ledyard beat Glastonbur­y (48-28), Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech (53-24) and New Britain (57-16). Brayden Grim (160) won twice by pin and another by decision for Ledyard (10-4) and Mason Barnett (152) won by pin, decision and technical fall.

• Mason Concascia (120 and 126 pounds) and AJ Sachatello (152 and 160) both won three matches and another by major decision at the Ellis Tech Duals. Waterford (8-9) beat Bacon Academy (63-41) and Conard (5127) and lost to Branford (64-14) and Ellis Tech (42-35).

Girls' indoor track

• Paige Martin of NFA won the pole vault at the SCC Coaches Invitation­al in New Haven, clearing 12-feet, 6-inches. NFA's 4x400 relay team of Makayla Kelley, Catherine Shannon, Sophie Jones and Kayla Park also won with a time of 4:15.34. The Wildcats also got a second from Park in the 1600 (5:13.96), a third from Kelley in the 1,000 (3:09.63) and a third from Madison Martin in the pole vault (10-0).

New London's Eliza Brown was fourth in the shot put (34-1), Fitch 4x200 relay team of Mary Rose Victorino, Abigail Rogers, Riley Marquis and Ashley Spreng finished fifth (1:54.19), Stonington teammates Vanessa Benjamin and Megan Detwiler were fifth (1:46.51) and sixth (1:46.93), respective­ly, in the 600, and Sophia Jones of NFA was sixth in the 3,200 (12:04.70).

Girls' fencing

• Waterford went 4-0, sweeping Ledyard and Griswold. In foil, the Lancers beat Ledyard 9-0 and Griswold 8-0 behind 30 points by Alex Cole, while Ledyard beat Griswold 6-3. In epee, Waterford beat Ledyard 9-0 and Griswold 8-1 as Melissa Vine scored 30 points. Griswold beat Ledyard 5-4.

• Fitch beat New London and St. Bernard by identical 5-4 scores in foil, with St. Bernard beating New London 7-2. Fitch beat St. Bernard 6-3 in epee.

Boys' fencing

• Ledyard went 2-0 in foil, beating Griswold 7-2 and Waterford 6-3 behind Wesley Silva's 30 points. Griswold beat Waterford 5-4. In epee, Waterford beat Griswold 6-3 and Ledyard 5-4 led by Hashin Crosland's 29 points and Ledyard beat Griswold 7-2.

• Fitch beat New London 8-1 in foil.

Swimming

• NFA beat the Windham co-op 7649 in an ECC meet on Friday night. Alex Ji and Anna Gosslin won two events each for NFA (2-3, 2-3) and teammate Noah McMahon also won an event.
