Victims of fatal Plainfield fire on Tuesday night identified
Plainfield — Police have released the names of the two people, one of them a child, who died in a house fire late Tuesday night.
Based on results of investigations by police and the fire marshal’s office, as well as autopsies performed Wednesday, the victims were identified as William Garriepy, 83, and Lucas Pearson, 9, police said in a news release Thursday. Both were residents of the home that burned at 855 Norwich Road.
Plainfield police and firefighters responded to the residence for a report of a fire about 10 p.m. Tuesday, where they found a home engulfed in flames, according to Plainfield police Chief Michael G. Surprenant.
The owner of the home was outside and told responders that two people were trapped inside the structure, including the child. Due to the magnitude of the flames, firefighters weren’t able to get inside, police said.
Once the fire was under control, firefighters entered the home and found the two people dead.
Plainfield school officials were notified of the child’s death and schools were offering support services, police said.
The Plainfield Fire Marshal’s Office, town police and the state police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit continue to investigate the blaze, the release said.
