Avery Point women fall in Region 21 title game

CGA sends six wrestlers to NCAA Championsh­ip

Brockton, Mass. — Host Massasoit Community College ended Avery Point two-year reign atop NJCAA Region 21 with a 97-85 win on Sunday in the championsh­ip game of the women's basketball tournament.

Ty Hawkins scored 36 points to lead Massasoit (24-0), which is ranked second nationally in NJCAA Division III. Former Stonington standout Aliza Bell scored 11 points and had five rebounds for Massasoit.

Old Lyme's Abby Stone scored 34 points and had nine rebounds, Rebekah Sanders of Quaker Hill scored 27 points and had 16 rebounds and Julitza Delgado scored 10 for Avery Point (19-9), which is ranked 13th nationally.

Stone and Sanders, who passed the 1,000 career rebound mark in the semifinals, both made the all-tournament team. The Pointers, who trailed by 27 points in the second half, outscored Massasoit 23-16 in the fourth quarter.

College wrestling

• Coast Guard, ranked 10th nationally, will send a record six wrestlers to the NCAA Championsh­ip led by a trio of Bears won captured regional titles leading the team to a second place finish for the second straight season at the NCAA Division III Northeast Wrestling Regional at Rhode Island College.

Philip Rogers (165), Paul Detwiler (184) and Jon Wagner (197) all won regional championsh­ips. AJ Aeberli (174) and Patrick Irwin (HWT) placed second while freshman Noah Caskey (141) won three matches on Sunday to place third and earn an NCAA bid. Caskey is a former Montville High standout. Wagner's title was his second straight.

The NCAA Division III Championsh­ips will take place March 13-14 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Johnson & Wales won the team title with 168 points, followed by Coast Guard (122.5) and New York University (122).

Rogers beat Taylor Shay from Roger Williams 1-0 in the semifinals at 165 pounds to earn a spot in the championsh­ip match and secure a spot at the NCAA Championsh­ips. He pinned Zack Lawrence from Springfiel­d in 2:36 to win the championsh­ip.

Aeberli won a 10-6 decision over Brett Leonard from Roger Williams in the semifinals to guarantee his return to the NCAA Championsh­ip. He dropped a 3-2 decision to Marco Gaita from Wesleyan in the final.

Detwiler was a 10-4 winner over Josh Smith from Southern Maine in the semifinals and beat Edwin Morales from Bridgewate­r State 9-3 to win the championsh­ip.

Wagner earned a 3-2 decision over Jack LaCorte from NYU to earn his spot in the final.Wagner beat Tommy Wrzesien from Johnson & Wales 5-4 to win the championsh­ip.

Irwin won a 2-1 decision over Williams Ortman from NYU in the semifinals, but was pinned byMichael DiNardo from Johnson & Wales in 5:41 in the final

Caskey (141) won an 8-3 decision over Nick Wagner from Roger Williams in his first consolatio­n match of the day before beating Nathan Lackman from Rhode Island College 2-1 to earn his spot in the third place match against Max Tempel from Castleton, who beat Caskey 3-1 in sudden victory on Saturday where he turned the tables beating Tempel 3-1 to earn his NCAA spot.

Caden Mareno (133) was pinned in 3:29 by Chris Trelli from Springfiel­d in his first match of the day.

College baseball

• Nick Knauth pitched seven strong innings as UConn beat New Orleans 9-2. Knauth (3-0) allowed six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Kyler Fedko was 4-for-5 and Erik Stock doubled and scored three runs for UConn (4-5).

• Mitchell College opened its season with a 7-2 loss to Otterbein on Saturday in the Snowbird Classic at Port Charlotte, Fla. Steve Cochrane had a run-scoring single in a two-run third inning for Mitchell.

H.S. hockey

• The Eastern CT Eagles closed out their regular season with a 6-0 win over Cheshire on Saturday night. Will Cannella had two goals and two assists, Evan Tower had two goals and an assist, Steve Turchetta and Kyle Marino had goals, Kevin Yang had an assist and Wes Williamson earfned the shutout in the net for the Eagles (10-9-1).

Men's hockey

• Marc Del Gaizo scored twice as No. 8 Massachuse­tts beat UConn 4-3 in a Hockey East game on Saturday night. Jonny Evans, Carter Turnbull and Jake Flynn scored goals and Wyatt Newpower and Benjamin Freeman had two assists each for UConn (15-14-4, 12-9-2).

College sailing

• The Connecticu­t College coed team opened its spring season by finishing fourth among eight schools at the Hap Moore Trophy regatta being hosted by Coast Guard. The Camels registered an 8-6 record over two days of round robin competitio­n against the other seven institutio­ns. Skippers Carter Pemberton, CJ McKenna, Walter Henry and Will Bedford as well as crew members Cecilia Moreira, Katie Rodger and Paige

Dunlevy all contribute­d to the team's success.

Men's indoor track

• Connecticu­t College's 4x800-meter relay team placed sixth in 8:02.31 at the New England Division III Championsh­ips on Saturday at Springfiel­d College. The team consisted of junior Ethan Milsark and freshmen Colm Seigne, Bennett MacDougall and Chris Verstandig. Jeffrey Love added a seventh in the 5,000 (15:11.37) and Jacob Brill-Weil was eighth in the 800 (1:56.96).

Women's indoor track

• Senior Koko Mensah won the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 10 inches, breaking her own school record of 45-4.5, at the New England Division III Championsh­ips on Saturday at Middlebury. The throw ranks second nationally behind only Nebraska Wesleyan's Dayton Dolincheck (473). Freshman Mary Rusnock added a sixth in the 600-meter race (1:40.96) for the Camels.

Men's squash

• Conn College wrapped up its season with a 5-4 win over Chatham at the CSA Nationals. Seniors Mikey Rodriguez, Samuel Piller and Winston Simone won their matches along with sophomores Christophe­r Mach and Tommy Whittemore for the Camels (10-11).
