Man found with drugs in car eludes police for brief moment

Ledyard — Police say a Mashantuck­et man led officers on a chase Tuesday in Ledyard after they found drugs in his car.

Officers captured Malik Nunn, 26, after using a stun gun on him in the Pumpkin Hill Market parking lot Tuesday night, according to the Ledyard Police Department. He had attempted to run away from police after they found marijuana and cocaine in his car during a traffic stop just before 9 p.m., police said.

Police said they smelled marijuana, which Nunn admitted to having in the car, and then spotted a small vial filled with white powder. When the powder tested positive for cocaine, Nunn took off toward Gallup Hill Road, police said.

He was taken into custody after a brief chase and was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine and interferin­g with an officer. He was scheduled to appear in court in New London on Wednesday.

In January of last year, Nunn was sentenced to one year in prison for credit card fraud and in 2013 he was sentenced to five years in prison and five years of special parole for second-degree robbery, according to court records. excavated Wednesday in the area and monitoring wells have been installed to evaluate groundwate­r.

Police say he grabbed two pens from an officer’s vest and attempted to use them as weapons.

Police said the struggle continued when other officers arrived, and Jean-Baptiste “had to be restrained up to the point when he could be chemically sedated by staff at the (William W. Backus Hospital) emergency room,” the arrest report said.
