St. Thomas More earns spot in today’s National Prep tourney quarters at Connecticu­t College

Fort Myers, Fla. — Nolan Johnson's grand slam capped a seven-run sixth inning as the Coast Guard Academy baseball team defeated SUNY Canton 14-6 on Tuesday.

SUNY Canton (0-5) scored three unearned runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead before the Bears (22) answered with seven in the home half.

Blake Carroll had an RBI double, Jon Pressley delivered a deep sacrifice fly to center before Greg Boland's RBI single tied the game 6-6. Johnson's homer to left was the first of his collegiate career giving the Bears a 10-6 lead.

Michael Gilmore (1-0) got the win in relief as he worked 2.1 innings allowing just one hit while walking one and striking out one.

Carroll led the Bears with three hits while also scoring and driving in three runs in the win.

Pressley had two hits and three RBIs while Brett Sullivan and Cody Fidler each had a hit and scored a pair of runs. In other games: • UConn rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Hartford 5-2 in its northern opener in West Hartford.

The Huskies (8-5) have won five straight.

Paul Gozzo drove in four runs for UConn, including a go-ahead threerun homer in the sixth. Chris Winkel added three hits and scored twice for the Huskies while Will Lucas pitched 3.1 innings of no-hit relief to earn the win and Caleb Wurster pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Hartford is 6-5.

Men's basketball

• St. Thomas More advanced to the quarterfin­als of the National Prep School Championsh­ip tournament with an 83-67 victory over Springfiel­d Commonweal­th at Connecticu­t

College's Luce Field House.

Jared Garcia led T-More with 27 points while Jair Currie and Elijah Perry finished with 16 points apiece.

The Chancellor­s will play Brewster Academy on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Brewster defeated T-More 100-85 on Saturday in the semifinals of the New England Class AAA Prep School tourney.

Women's lacrosse

• Zoe Dyer had five goals and two assists to lead Christophe­r Newport to a 16-12 win over Coast Guard. The Captains (3-4) took a 6-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game. Etta Davis scored a team-high four goals, Haley McCue had three goals, and Gianna Cascio scored twice for the Bears (3-2).

Men's tennis

• Coast Guard won five of six singles matches during a 7-3 win over Millsaps in Orlando, Fla. Banks Evans was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles, Lucas Arora won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2, Arthur Wicke was a 6-4, 6-7, 10-5 winner at No. 3, Chris Lansing won 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 and Kyle Fager grinded out a 6-3, 4-6, 12-10 win at No. 5. The Bears (3-2) The Bears also won two of three doubles matches as Evans-Fager won 8-4 at No. 1 and Wicke-James Vuille-Kowing won 8-4 at No. 3.

H.S. hockey

• The fourth-seeded Wethersfie­ld/ Manchester/Rocky Hill/Plainville coop scored four times in the second period and beat the Eastern Connecticu­t Eagles 5-0 in a CIAC Division II first-round game on Monday night. Wes Williamson had 49 saves for the Eagles, who finish 10-11-1.
