Mystic — A day after a Rhode Island child, who attended the preschool and child care facility Precious Memories Place, tested positive for COVID-19, the facility informed parents that the state Department of Health granted it permission to reopen on Monday, excluding any children or staff who had direct contact with the affected child.

The 168 Greenmanville Ave. facility plans to keep its infant and preschool wings shuttered but will open four rooms in its toddler wing, which, owner and director Christine Eckersley said in a letter to parents, “is clear from exposure to the positive case.”

The case, the first involving a victim with a connection to eastern Connecticut, was disclosed Friday afternoon by Ledge Light Health District.

Eckersley said the child who tested positive for the virus was last at the facility on March 9 and was only in direct contact with seven children and four staff members, who were personally notified by the health department to quarantine.

Ledge Light Health District will be visiting the center today for a full inspection, after extensive cleaning, based on guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has been completed, Eckersley said.

Starting Monday, staff and children will have their temperature taken upon arrival to the facility, and anyone with a fever will be immediately sent home. All the children’s hands will be washed upon arrival and departure, Eckersley said, and any child showing signs or symptoms of the illness caused by the virus will be sent home. Outdoor playtime will be extended and windows in each classroom will be open.

“It is not our intent to be careless at any level; our goal is to provide services to those who really need us,” Eckersley said.

She is “strongly” encouraging families to reach out to local and state health departments.

“These organizations have educated us and give the facts that people need to feel comfortable moving forward,” she said.
