FOXWOODS, MOHEGAN SUN CASINOS’ SLOT REVENUES WERE UP IN FEBRUARY

- — Brian Hallenbeck

In February, a month relatively untainted by the effects of the coronavirus, Foxwoods Resorts Casino and Mohegan Sun posted a second consecutive month of year-over-year gains in slot-machine revenue, figures released in recent days show.

The casinos might not be able to duplicate such a feat for some time.

Heeding Gov. Ned Lamont’s call for most businesses in the state to shut down, the tribal gaming resorts agreed to close to the public at 8 Tuesday night.

Foxwoods reported that it “won,” or kept, $35.7 million in slots revenue after paying prizes in February, a 4.5% increase over the $34.2 million it kept in February 2019. Mohegan Sun kept $44.5 million last month, up 2.2% from the $3.5 million it kept the same month a year ago.

The casinos benefited from an extra day — a Saturday — in February 2020, a leap year, compared to February 2019.

Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun had reported gains in January of 4.6% and 7.6%, respectively. Both casinos experienced double-digit declines in December.

The casinos pay 25% of their slots win to the state. Foxwoods’ February payment was $9 million, while Mohegan Sun contributed $11.1 million.
