Tires slashed on more than 30 vehicles in New London

New London — Tires were slashed on more than 30 vehicles last week, according to police.

Between the evening of March 17 and the early morning of March 18, the tires were slashed on at least 30 vehicles parked on Meridian Street, Masonic Street, Huntington Street, State Pier Road and in the area near Hodges Square, according to police.

Police released photos from a surveillance video that shows a person wearing a black jacket or sweatshirt, a gray hood, dark pants and black and white sneakers reaching down toward a tire on a black van and then walking away.

About a month ago, police charged a 14-year-old boy they believe was involved in slashing tires on 25 vehicles in two latenight sprees in New London on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24.

Police identified the boy while investigating an incident of tires being damaged in the area of Williams and Broad streets about 10:15 p.m. on Feb. 24. At 11:58 p.m. the night before, a person called police to report slashed tires on a vehicle near 187 Huntington St. When officers arrived, they found that tires had been slashed on 24 other vehicles parked on Prospect, Federal, Broad and Hempstead streets, police said.

The boy, who was not identified because he is a minor, was issued a summons on a charge of third-degree criminal mischief, city police said.

Police said they weren’t yet sure if this week’s vandalism was related to last month’s incident. They had no one in custody as of Tuesday and the investigation was ongoing.
