ONLINE FEEDBACK

-

Readers of theday.com had mixed feelings about last week’s article, “East Lyme to close town beaches to nonresidents.” By keeping beaches open only to locals, the town hopes to promote social distancing.

“Is it really the towns legitimate responsibility to separate resident and non resident beachgoers for Covid reasons? How much in Federal funds (paid with out of town and state taxpayer tax dollars) were spent for beach repair after hurricanes not to mention boardwalk repair and construction. If the beaches legitimately have to be regulated for Covid measures then close them for attendance and maintenance immediately. And we will all suffer with that medication equally. Sniff sniff? is that rotten seaweed or an ACLU discrimination lawsuit I smell.” — John Drabik

“Special circumstances such as a pandemic warrant temporary common-sense solutions which may fly in the face of standard operating procedure. (First Selectman) Nickerson has that right.” — Lynn Young

“Who is to say that the residents themselves won’t overcrowd the beaches? What is overcrowding? Better to stay closed.” — Michael Malley

“I think opening for resident taxpayers only, at this time, is fair. Limited numbers.” — Lori Gatheral

“I commend … this decision … trying to allow beaches open for the summer. This is the only way to at least give it the best opportunity for success and it will be up to residents to make it work. If distances are not maintained the only ones to blame will be the residents. I feel optimistic this decision will allow those residents who wish to use the beaches the opportunity to do so.” — Jeff Scheelera

“If it was unconstitutional to exclude nonresidents (Leydon v. Greenwich) from CT municipal public parks before, why is it o.k. now?” — John Bernier

“Will probably need the police to be with the attendants.” — Tom DeSantis
