Commenters on theday.com discussed the ramifications of opening beaches after reading the editorial “The challenge of keeping beaches open this summer,” published May 16, 2020.

“This virus is not done yet. We still do not know a lot about it but what we do know is that it is a highly infectious one. Many countries have had to live in conditions to protect themselves, the war torn like Syria who have had to live that way for far too long. As we just so selfish that we cannot continue to act in regard for our fellow Americans? Are we so hell bent on our “rights” that we are willing to ignore the warnings of the medical professionals as we get mixed messages and downright lies from the current administration? The world is watching us now with most likely outright disgust. The once shining light of the State of Liberty has been extinguished.” — Anne Nelson

“Wearing masks at the beach will make for some interesting tan lines.” — Edward Planeta Jr.

“I honestly believe that Eastern Point Beach can accommodate City of Groton Residents and nonresidents also. Beach lovers must be open to using our 9.4acre park in new ways with new rules. The Beach will need areas of active use and quiet use and visitors will have to follow directions. I suggest sitting areas such as benches, picnic tables, parking area were folks just want to sit in their cars and enjoy views and posts on the beach where one to five can gather be marked in red. … Parking along the shore facing the river reserved for those who will remain in their cars. No food service and limited or no bathroom use may also be necessary. Parking passes for City Residents only and day passes for nonresidents. One must realize with reduced beach use it is unlikely everyone will get in all the time so selling parking passes to everyone will not work.” — Michael Boucher

“I really hope it goes well and people follow the rules and protocol. We can do it, but will we? As we all know it only takes a few selfish idiots to ruin a good thing for everyone. I think it will be difficult to keep young children away from each other though. As for me I won’t be going to a beach any time soon.” — Val Kelly
