FIRE DISPLACES FAMILY IN NORWICH
Norwich — The American Red Cross and Backus Hospital are assisting a family displaced by a fire at 36 Hedge Ave. late Monday night, the Norwich Fire Department said in a news release Tuesday.
City firefighters were dispatched to the two-story, single-family home at 10:20 p.m. Monday for a structure fire, the fire department said. A second alarm was started, bringing the Mohegan Tribal Fire Department Firefighter Assist Team along with the East Great Plain, Laurel Hill and Taftville volunteer fire departments to assist.
The news release said there was extensive fire from the sides and rear of the first floor extending to the second floor.
There were no reported injuries. Norwich police reported that all residents were out, and then several fire crews searched the building to confirm. Also responding were American Ambulance, Norwich Public Utilities and the Norwich Building Department.
The Norwich Fire Department said crews “worked for the better part of an hour overhauling and extinguishing fire in void spaces,” and the blaze was knocked down at 11:06 p.m.
Several companies remained on scene until 1:52 a.m. checking for hot spots. The Norwich Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. the mental health of officers and dispatchers is always paramount.
The State’s Attorney’s Office from New London arrived at the scene to take over the investigation, which is being conducted by the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad. available for comment Tuesday.
