Sun announce fundraising iniatives for 'Change Can't Wait'
The Connecticut Sun will hold a season-long “Free Throws for Change” fundraiser, one of three separate initiatives that will raise money for local non-profits as part of its new “Change Can't Wait” social reform platform, the team announced Wednesday
The money raised through the initiatives will go to programs that help both women and children.
“I couldn't be more proud of the commitment the Connecticut Sun organization has made to support Black lives,” Sun point guard Jasmine Thomas said in a release. “Not only have they listened to and amplified our voices, they've now created a platform to work with us on social reform. The opportunities that the Change Can't Wait campaign will present makes me feel good to represent the Sun.”
Connecticut starts its abbreviated WNBA regular-season at noon Sunday against the Minnesota Lynx at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
A $5 donation will be made to the Connecticut Sun Foundation for every free throw a Sun player makes during the first three quarters of a game this season. A $10 donation will be made for every free throw the team makes in the fourth quarter.
Connecticut will auction off game-worn and individually signed jerseys via the DASH app when the season ends.
All game jerseys feature Breonna Taylor's name under each respective Sun player name. The recognition of Taylor, was shot eight times and killed by police in her Kentucky home on March 13, is part of an overall effort by WNBA players to recognize women who have died due to alleged police brutality or racial injustice.
The Sun will also sell “Change Can't Wait” t-shirts for $20 with net proceeds of $15 per shirt going to the overall fundraising effort. They may be purchased online at ConnecticutSun.com.
