UC women add walk-on to roster

Storrs — The UConn women's basketball program has added walk-on Autumn Chassion to its 2020-21 roster, head coach Geno Auriemma announced Saturday.

Chassion, a 5-foot-8 guard from Lafayette, La., averaged 15 points and 10 assists per-game as a senior at Lafayette Christian Academy, which won four straight Louisiana Division III state championsh­ips. Chassion was also LCA's valedictor­ian with a 4.0 grade point average.

"I knew that when I was presented the opportunit­y to play at one of the most prestigiou­s universiti­es and play under the best coach in women's basketball that it was a once-ina-lifetime opportunit­y. I knew I had to take it," Chassion said in a UConn release.

Chassion arrived on campus last week with the Huskies' other 10 players and joins a freshman class which includes Paige Bueckers, Aaliyah Edwards, Piath Gabriel, Mir McLean and Nika Muhl.

Black Wolves sign Byrne

• The New England Black Wolves of the National Lacrosse League have signed Mike Byrne to a two-year contract. The defender has seen limited action in two seasons with the Black Wolves, collecting 12 loose balls and two turnovers in three games.

"Mike is one of the hardest working and coachable players I've ever been around," general manager and head coach Glenn Clark said. "His teammates love how he plays an honest game. He continues to work at his craft and become a full-time NLL Player."

College honors

• Seven members of the Connecticu­t College women's tennis team earned Scholar-Athlete honors by the Intercolle­giate Tennis Associatio­n: Elena Erdekian, Meredith Kenny, Meera Narayanan-Pandit, Stephanie Simon, Alexandra Waldman, Rachel Weiss and Hayley Zukerberg. All seven earned a GPA of at least 3.50 during the 2019-20 academic year and helped the Camels earn academic All-America team honors with a 3.68 GPA.

• Ten members of the Conn College men's tennis team also earned Scholar-Athlete honors by the ITA: Zachary Danz, Guillermo Garcia Rincon, Evan Goldsmith, Brian Gould, Sean Jenkins, Gabriel Josephs, Walter Komishane, Tim Pesek, Michael Sarazen and Julian Tien. The Camels also earned academic All-America team honors with a 3.50 GPA.
