Patriots' Belichick keeping mum on his kicker for Week 1

-

Bill Belichick didn't tip his hand with regard to which kicker would handle duties Week 1.

Currently, the Patriots have two kickers on the practice squad, none on the 53-man roster.

Veteran Nick Folk and rookie Justin Rohrwasser are holding two of the 16 spots on the practice squad.

Asked if he anticipated moving Folk to his game-day roster with the season opener against the Dolphins on tap, Belichick wouldn't bite. He just made note that there would likely be plenty of moves made throughout the league. That could mean signing someone off the practice squad, or perhaps seeing what other kickers are available. "We'll see how the whole roster thing plays out. I'm sure there will be a lot of roster movement throughout the league today, tomorrow, probably even Wednesday," Belichick said via video conference Monday morning. "I don't think we've seen the end of player transactions."

It's possible Folk, who beat out Rohrwasser in the kicking competition, will be elevated if one of the players on the current roster is put on short-term injured reserve. Running back Damien Harris, who reportedly had surgery to repair an injured pinkie, would be a candidate for that distinction.

Asked about Folk's leg strength, which was pretty much on par with Rohrwasser, Belichick noted how seasonal conditions were a factor.

"Nick came in last year in the middle of the season. Any time you kick in New England in November and December, you see a difference in the way the ball travels. Not necessarily leg strength, but the results of the kick are a little different in November and December than they are at the end of August," said Belichick. "I'd say it's a little hard to tell (if Folk looks stronger), because the conditions are so different. But Nick's come in, and obviously done a good with us 'cause we put him on the practice squad, and want to continue to work with him. And, so, we'll take it from there and see how it goes."
