Conway leads Wheeler to victory in boys' cross country

Montville — Wheeler freshman Cameron Conway won the race and depth carried the Lions to a 27-31 win over St. Bernard in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference boys' cross country meet on Monday.

Conway won with a time of 20:39 and was followed by three St. Bernard (0-2) runners — Andrew Graves (21:32), Alex Gonzalez (21:41) and Ian Gonzalez (21:47). But Wheeler's other four scorers came next to earn the Lions (2-2) the win. Evan Browne, Ben Dobley, David Anderson and Kyle Montigny wrapped up the victory.

Girls' cross country

• St. Bernard took the top six spots and beat Wheeler 15-50 in an ECC meet. Serena Britner won the race with a time of 21:10, followed by Phoebe Foley (23:13), Lillian Turner ( 23: 51), Rachel Kunka (23:58), Katie Power (25:24) and Sophie Addison (25:31) of the Saints (2-0). Lucy Smith of Wheeler (1-2) was seventh in 27:03.

Speedbowl

• Wayne Burroughs and Ken Cassidy Jr. wrapped up season championsh­ips at the Waterford-New London Speedbowl on Saturday.

Burroughs finished fifth in the 25-lap SK Lite race to take his first title and Cassidy Jr. won his fourth Truck race of the season to clinch the title.

The title for Cassidy Jr. is his sixth at the track, with the other five coming in Mini Stocks.

Jason Palmer won both the Late Models and Legend Car races.

Other winners on Saturday were Eric Berndt (SK Modified), Charlie McDougall (SK Lites), Jason Chicolas (Sportsmen), Charles Canfield (Mini Stock), and Adam Petty (Street Stocks).

The season concludes this weekend. The are nine races scheduled for Saturday and five races on Sunday, highlighte­d by the 75-lap SK Modified feature.
