UConn men to play Vanderbilt in Legends Classic opener

UConn will play Vanderbilt in the second game of the 2020 Roman Legends Classic semifinal doublehead­er on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

The matchups were announced on Friday.

Southern Cal and Brigham Young will meet in the first game of the doublehead­er at 2:30 p.m., with the UConn-Vanderbilt game set to tip at approximat­ely 5 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN2.

The Legends Classic championsh­ip will tip off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, and be shown on ESPN. The consolatio­n game will start at about 9:30 p.m. (ESPN2).

UConn has captured all three previous meetings against Vanderbilt, including a 73- 53 win in the 2004 NCAA tournament Phoenix regional semifinals. The Huskies went on to win the national championsh­ip.

Vanderbilt, a member of the Southeaste­rn Conference, is coached by Jerry Stackhouse. The Commodores return three starters from a team that went 11-20 last season.

UConn has never faced USC or BYU, which finished 22-9 and 24-8 last season, respective­ly.

H.S. cross country

• Old Lyme finished fifth in the Shoreline Conference girls' championsh­ips, a meet held over two days at Totoket Park in North Branford with the times merged to determine the winners. East Hampton won the team title with 30 points (Haddam-Killingwor­th was second with 36) while Old Lyme finished with 126 points. Sophomores Maddy Morgado and Alyssa Spooner earned all-conference honors for the Wildcats as Morgado finished 10th in 22:48 and Spooner 16th in 23:38. In the boys' race, senior Aidan Powers earned all-conference honors for Old Lyme by placing 15th in 18:00.

H.S. volleyball

• Griswold remained unbeaten with a 25-7, 25-14 and 25-11 win over Windham. Kamryn Lathrop had nine kills, two blocks and one ace for the Wolverines (6-0) while Makayla Neilson added five kills and two blocks, Kenadee Rubino had three aces and 20 service points, and Sonja Matheson had four aces, three kills and three digs.

• Bacon Academy rolled to a 25-17, 25-8 and 25-14 win over Wheeler in the ECC. Kiera Steward had 15 assists for the Bobcats ( 5- 5) while Ashley Clark had seven aces, Julia Baehr and Jen Whipple six kills apiece and Grace Gorreck four kills. Wheeler is 0-9.

• Ledyard ended its regular season with a 3-1 victory over NFA in the ECC. Game scores were 25-22, 18-25, 25-15 and 25-21. Hannah Avila had 28 assists, four kills and four aces to lead the Colonels (5-5) while Madi Leyko had nine kills and four blocks, Kira Kassim 10 kills and two aces, Codee Carroll 17 digs and two aces, and Natalie Poulton nine kills and six digs. Sarah Ericson had 13 assists and six kills for NFA (0-3) while Ari Gauthier added 23 digs and Marissa Waters had three blocks.
