Stonington field hockey team beats NFA for 10th straight win

Woodstock — Stonington erupted for four goals in the second half to defeat Woodstock Academy 5- 0 in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference field hockey game on Saturday.

The Bears ( 11- 1) have won 10 straight.

Hannah Nulick gave Stonington a 1- 0 lead in the first quarter before the Bears scored twice in the third quarter and two more times in the fourth to pull away.

Ellie Korinek scored two of those goals while Dillon Griscom and Teagan O'Brien each scored once. Nulick and Korinek had assists for Stonington, which held 15- 3 edge in shots and 10- 4 edge in penalty corners.

Maddie Allard stopped three shots in goal to earn the shutout for the Bears, who will be the top seed in the upcoming ECC postseason experience.

• Vanessa Benjamin scored three goals as Stonington rallied from a 2- 1 deficit to defeat Norwich Free Academy 4- 2 in the ECC. Carleigh

O'Keefe also scored for the Bears ( 9- 1- 1), assisted by Benjamin, while Rachel Sabbadini and Ivy Goodman also had assists. Kayla Park and Hannah Daniewicz scored goals for the Wildcats ( 1- 3), who were outshot 14- 11.

Boys' soccer

The ECC postseason experience will begin on Monday with a pair of Region I first round matches. No. 3 Waterford will host No. 6 Bacon Academy at 4: 30 p. m. and No. 4 East Lyme will host No. 5 NFA at 6 p. m. Top- seeded Stonington and No. 2 Ledyard received first round byes and will host semifinal matches on Wednesday.

In Region II, Norwich Tech is the No. 1 seed while Woodstock Academy is the top seed in Region III. Semifinals in those tournament­s will also be played Wednesday with championsh­ip and consolatio­n games to be played on Saturday at the sites of the higher seeds.
