Talking truth and the abortion debate

-

Craig Sculli’s letter to The Day, “Truth still matters in abortion debate” (Oct. 22), denounced the manipulation, fraud, and deception that an anti-abortion group used in 2015 to undermine Planned Parenthood. Sculli’s statement that “Truth still matters” inspired me to respond.

Here are some truths that have been neglected by virtually everyone who thinks abortion is health care and simply a decision a woman makes about her own body.

Truth: An embryo has its own developing set of eyes, ears, toes, and fingers, has its own heartbeat and its own DNA. It is not part of the mother’s body.

Truth: Our Declaration of Independence states that we are all created equal and we have the unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Science has confirmed that when sperm meets egg a life is created. Yet, over the past 45 years, we have “legally” denied over 65 million babies the right to life.

Truth: A drunk driver hits a car head on and kills a pregnant woman and her unborn child and gets arrested for a double homicide.

If that anti-abortion group used deception in an effort to unmask Planned Parenthood they went about it wrongly. However, if the Supreme Court, Congress and we, the people, think that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness should apply to everyone, then we have absolutely gone about it the wrong way since 1972.
