John H. Langle

Gales Ferry — After a life of service to country and community John H. Langle died at his home in Gales Ferry on Jan. 22, 2021, after a period of declining health. He was born in New York in 1928.

A veteran of the Korean War, he was a Naval commissary man on vessels including the LST Foss, Aircraft carrier Leyte, subs Tench and Bancroft. After his retirement he was a self-employed painter/ wallpaper hanger enjoying friendship and stories about local history with many of his customers. John was a charter member of the Killingly Quiet Corner Lions Club, and a member of the Ledyard Lions, keeping the kitchen going every bingo night. He received a Melvin Jones award for exemplifyi­ng the Lion’s Motto: We Serve.

He traveled the world, and visited most of our national parks, driving cross country five times. John was a constant teacher and wise in many practical things. He grew the world’s best tomatoes. To be sure, Margaritte and Kat from Hartford HealthCare at Home Hospice helped him complete his last voyage.

His beloved wife, Jean V. Fox, predecease­d him. A good neighbor and a good father, he gave his daughters wings. He is survived by Susan Langle (Sara Groesch) of Claremont, N.H. and Laurel Kohl (Thomas Kohl) of Dayville; granddaugh­ters, Aimee Genna (John Genna), Heather Kohl (Chris Parden); four great-grandsons; and dear family friend Pascal Carpentier of Liege, Belgium.
