Fitch girls open with a victory

Groton — Alyssa Virtue and Charlotte Carney each contribute­d double-doubles as Fitch opened its season with a 53-48 Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division I girls' basketball victory over Ledyard on Friday night.

Virtue finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Falcons and Carney had 11 points and 13 rebounds. Rita Sefransky also reached double figures for Fitch with 14 points.

Natalyah Williams made three 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 21 points for the Colonels.

In other games:

• Ashley Lizotte scored a career-high 14 points to highlight Bacon Academy's 69-36 season-opening win over St. Bernard in an ECC Division I game. Caitlin Shea scored a game-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers, for the Bobcats while Marissa Nudd had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Valerie Luizzi finished with 10 points. Angela Tompkins made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points for the Saints and Sophia Boras added 12.

• Milena Walker had 27 points and 17 rebounds as Waterford cruised to a 69-20 win over Stonington in an ECC Division I game. Lily Kramer added 12 points for the Lancers while Natalie Lombardi finished with nine points and four rebounds and Amy Pinch had five steals.

• Emily DeRoehan had 12 points and 12 rebounds as Old Lyme rolled to a 56-13 victory over Portland in the Shoreline Conference. Emma McColluch added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats (1-1) while Sam Gray finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. It was the season opener for Portland.

H.S. boys' basketball

• Yianni Baribeau had 15 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots in Killingly's 5727 season-opening win over Griswold in an ECC Division II game. Jacob Strain led Griswold with 9 points.

• Colbe Andrews had 19 points and 15 rebounds as Old Lyme outscored Portland 20-14 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 59-54 season-opening Shoreline Conference win over the Highlander­s. Frank Sablone added 12 points for the Wildcats and John Almy had 10.

• Grasso Tech improved to 2-0 with a 47-36 win over Norwich Tech in a Connecticu­t Technical Conference East Division game on Thursday. Donnel Brown led Grasso with 19 points and Javion Velez scored 17.

Men's hockey

• Goalie Jaxson Stauber made 20 saves as No. 16 Providence blanked No. 20 UConn 4-0 in a Hockey East match. The Huskies (8-8-2) were shut out for the first time this season. Tyce Thompson had two goals an assist for the Friars (9-6-4). Goalie Tomas Vomacka made 28 saves for UConn.
