Ledyard — Palmer Austin Watrous passed away suddenly and unexpectedly Feb. 15, 2021, at his home in Ledyard.

He is survived by his wife Margaret “Miff” (Smith) Watrous; son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Chrissy Watrous; four grandchildren: Chelsea Funk and her husband Ryan Martin, Troy Funk, Liam Watrous, and Claire Watrous; a great-grandson, Austin Funk; and his sisters, Delight Allen, Hope Bowman and Linda Dobbert. He was predeceased by his parents, Palmer and Alice Watrous; a daughter, Andrea Funk; brother Steve Watrous; and sister Rebecca Perrone.

Palmer was born April 9, 1942, and grew up Ledyard, attending Norwich Regional Technical High School until enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in 1960. In 1963, while stationed in England, he met his wife, Margaret. Palmer and Miff spent the next 57 years traveling the world together, during his 23 years in the Air Force as well as his many years working for Ship Analytics. Following his retirement, he and his wife continued to travel extensively.

Palmer’s legacy will live on through his loved ones in the form of good old Yankee ingenuity and a purposeful, relentless work ethic. He has nurtured us with kind, strong and quietly ever-present love. Most cherished are the memories of his sharp, dry sense of humor coupled with his trademark boyish smirk. May we all strive to be five with 73 years of experience in his memory.

Services will be held privately. The Mystic Funeral Home has charge of Palmer’s arrangements.
