Lenore Schoen

Montville — Lenore Mary (Baker) Schoen, “Sunflower,” 71, of Uncasville went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Feb. 12, 2021, at the Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.

Lenore was born Aug. 4, 1949, in New Haven, the daughter of the late Robert T. Baker Sr. and Mary A. (Murray) Baker. She wed Alex C. Schoen III on May 2, 1975, at St. Francis Church in New Haven, and they were happily married for 45 years. In addition to her husband, she leaves their son, Alex C. Schoen IV of Branford. She is also survived by many cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Robert T. Baker Jr.

Lenore was a graduate of St. Francis Elementary School and St. Mary’s High School, both of New Haven, where she developed important, lifelong friendships. Lenore worked several administrative jobs, most notably at Blue Cross of Connecticut, The Credit Bureau of Connecticut, and St. Francis School of New Haven.

Lenore was a proud Mohegan Tribal member and took “Sunflower” as her Mohegan name in 2003. She enjoyed day trips to area casinos with her husband, as well as vacationing with her family at East Sandwich Beach on Cape Cod, and at Walt Disney World. She especially enjoyed trips to Disney at Christmas time, which was her favorite time of the year. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and needlework, making beautiful blankets and hats. She was an avid New York Yankees fan, and enjoyed attending games at Yankee Stadium, especially with her son. Their fondest Yankee memory together was being in attendance for Derek Jeter’s only career grand slam on June 18, 2005. Most of all, she enjoyed spending quality time with her husband, being a fantastic mother to her son, and a wonderful Auntie to all of her nieces and nephews.

Lenore was an incredibly strong woman who endured many serious medical issues throughout her life. She suffered from rheumatic fever as a child. She overcame and survived breast cancer in 2003. After suffering near-complete congestive heart failure in October 2012, she underwent a successful heart transplant in June 2013. The extra years this provided were treasured by Lenore, her family, and friends. She suffered severe trauma to both legs shortly afterwards, and was diagnosed with post-transplant kidney failure in February 2020. Despite all this, Lenore never lost her positive outlook, her faith, or her love for life.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2021, at the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen, 53 Route 32, Montville. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Church, 22 Maple Avenue in Montville, meeting directly at the church. Burial in All Saints Cemetery, 700 Middletown Ave., North Haven, will be held at a later date to be announced at www. montvillefuneralhome.com.
