ECC announces it won't allow fans for remainder of winter season

The Eastern Connecticut Conference announced Monday it will not allow fans to attend any winter sporting events the rest of the season, but will consider changing its policy for the spring season.

Gary Makowicki, commissioner of the ECC, released the following statement:

"The Eastern Connecticut Conference board of control agreed to maintain the current policy to not allow spectators at all winter events through the end of the winter season. This decision is aligned with both the CIAC and the DPH's continued recommendation to not allow spectators.

"This decision also demonstrates the league's commitment to ensuring the safety and well being for the student-athletes, coaches and officials. The board of directors will revisit the policy for the spring season."

H.S. girls' basketball

• Emily DeRoehn had 20 points, six rebounds and two steals as Old Lyme won its fourth straight game with a 50-21 win over Old Saybrook in the Shoreline Conference. Sam Gray added 17 points and Megan Loflin scored seven for the Wildcats (4-1). Old Saybrook is 2-1.

• Griswold missed a game-tying shot at the buzzer and lost to Plainfield, 35-33, in the ECC North Division. Hailey Eliasson led the Wolverines (0-3) with seven points while Bella Rubino had eight rebounds and Abbie Wing four points and seven rebounds.

H.S. boys' basketball

• Frank Sablone went 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final minutes as Old Lyme outlasted Old Saybrook 44-39 in the Shoreline Conference. Sablone finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats (2-1) while John Almy added 12. Trailing 40-39, Mav Swaney put the goahead basket for Old Lyme before Salone made two free throws and Colbe Andrews added with two more in the final 20 seconds. • Lyman Memorial scored only nine points in the first half and couldn't recover during a 62-22 road loss to Woodstock Academy in the ECC North Division. Jaiden Lopez scored 10 points to lead the Bulldogs (0-2).

College basketball

• Coast Guard Academy and Mitchell College will take to the court for the first time this season when the Bears host a men's and women's doubleheader on Saturday. The men's game will start at noon and the women's game will begin at 3:45 p.m. Spectators will not be allowed at either game.

Coast Guard will honor its seniors prior to both games (11:45 a.m. for the men, 3:30 p.m. for the women) while the Bear Club will present last year's men's players and the coaching staff for their NCAA rings. The Bears qualified for the 2020 NCAA Division III tournament after winning the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament.
