No. 1 UConn women play St. John’s in Big East tourney quarters today

UConn has reached an agreement with both men's basketball coach Dan Hurley and football coach Randy Edsall to extend their respective contracts each by two years, the school announced on Friday.

Hurley's extension will carry his contract through March 31, 2027, "with compensation valued at $2,900,000 during the 2021-22 contract year."

In his third year in charge, Hurley has guided the Huskies to third place in the program's first season back in the Big East and they're closing in on securing their first NCAA tournament bid since 2016.

"You obviously feel good," Hurley said during a Zoom call to preview today's regular-season finale against Georgetown. "To be honest with you, I'm not spending a whole lot of time thinking about it. I'm focused on tomorrow and getting a great win to end this regular season and get to New York. I feel great about where we're at. "It's only bigger and better from here. I understand this is year three and I'm happy with where we're at. But we've got to continue to get this thing to a higher level because that's the standard here. That's why I wanted to be here. And why I'm so honored to lead the Huskies, at least on the men's side."

"During Dan's introductory press conference almost three years ago, I said that he is the absolute right fit for UConn," athletic director David Benedict said in a release. "The success of the team this year, the culture he has instilled in the program, and the excitement the Huskies have generated through UConn Nation make it abundantly clear that coach Hurley is the right leader of our men's basketball program for many years to come."

Edsall's deal has been extended through Dec. 31, 2023, "with compensation valued at $1,256,000 during the 2021-22 contract year."

In his fourth year during his second head coaching stint in Storrs, Edsall is preparing the Huskies to return to action this fall after the team elected to sit out the 2020 season due to health and safety concerns over competing during the pandemic.

"When I hired Randy, he and I knew that rebuilding our football program was a long-term project that would require a great deal of patience," Benedict said. "My confidence in his ability to revive UConn football remains strong, and I look forward to watching a committed group of young men compete on the gridiron this fall."
