Coast Guard's Maeve Roach wins Division III Elite national title in mile

Coast Guard senior Maeve Roach set a school and facility record to capture the national championsh­ip in the mile at Friday's Division III Elite Indoor Track and Field Championsh­ips in Waverly, Iowa.

Roach, the top seed, finished in 4 minutes, 57.22 seconds, the fastest time during this indoor Division III season. Wartburg's Aubrie Fisher was second (4:59.47).

Mia Huncharek placed ninth in the 5,000 meters (18:25.89) for Coast Guard and Leilani Salang was 10th in the weight throw (49 feet, 0.25 inches).

Josiah Davis (800 meters), Tanner Johannsen (high jump) and Roach (800 meters) will all compete for the Bears on the second and final day of the championsh­ips on Saturday.

Wartburg organized the meet after the cancellati­on of the 2021 NCAA Division III Winter Championsh­ips. The top 16 individual athletes in respective events and the top 12 relay teams were invited, as verified by Track & Field Results Reporting System.

Wrestling

• Paul Detwiler (184 pounds), Phil Rogers (165), Jon Wagner (197) and unseeded AJ Pagliarulo (141) all advanced to the semifinals of the National Wrestling Coaches Associatio­n Division III Championsh­ips at Coralville, Iowa.

Montville's Noah Caskey (149) and Tony Ulaszek (157) are both alive in the consolatio­n bracket and earned top eight spots.

Men’s basketball

• Avery Point lost its home opener to New Hampshire Tech, 87-82. Nik Hay had 24 points, six rebounds and five steals, Nolan Molkenthin had 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, and Neko Jones had 17 points and six rebounds for the Pointers.
