Barbara Thompson
Niantic — Barbara E. Thompson, 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Niantic, March 7, 2021, surrounded by family. She was born in
New London, Nov. 29, 1929, to the late Stella (Olbrys) and Thomas Casey. She was predeceased by her late husband John Thompson Feb. 10, 2000, and Norman W. Carbee Nov. 24, 1984.
Barbara lived a full life as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend and volunteer. She spent time living in the Midwest for close to 15 years prior to returning to Connecticut, raising her family in New London, Montville and Uncasville, then moving to Plainfield, after her marriage to John Thompson. Over the last 12 years, she has lived with her youngest son Dean, first in Merrimack, Mass., then they moved to Niantic. Volunteering came natural to her starting with, as a teenager, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and her children’s extracurricular activities including den mother. She always remained active in her church and senior centers.
She wore many hats professionally besides mother. Chuckling, she would tell you about her first paid job as a soda jerk during her last two years of high school. Other jobs throughout her life range from an elevator operator in a 52-story building in Chicago, sales associate and cashier. Again, she would find herself back at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital working in supply, working to becoming the first secretary of the department.
Barbara is survived by her two sons, David Dumais of Alexandria, Va., and Dean Dumais of Niantic; and daughter Dori Manville of Montville; brother Terrance Casey of East Lyme; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
