Susan O’Connell

-

Mystic — Susan Robertson O’Connell, of Mystic, passed away at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Born in Hartford, she was the daughter of Neal H. O’Connell and the late Alice H. O’Connell of Mystic.

Susan enjoyed her younger childhood summers exploring the tidal pools at her family’s cottage on Leetes Island in Guilford. Here, she enjoyed time with grandparents, family and friends. Later, she spent her summers in Noank, sailing and cruising on her family’s sailboat “Dundee,” forging lifelong friendships with many. After her education was completed, her zest for life led her on a solo trip to Europe, where she fully enveloped the experience, working in various places and learning the culture of the places she visited. After returning to the United States, she settled in New Orleans. Upon leaving New Orleans, she returned to Mystic, where she became a home health aide, a job she deeply loved. One of Susan’s fondest memories is when she traveled to Russia with her parents, a trip she often reflected on. Susan’s witty personality and infectious laugh will be missed.

Susan is survived by father Neal H. O’Connell of Mystic; her brother Neal S. O’Connell and wife Lawry of Niantic; and her nephew Neal S. O’Connell Jr. of Mystic. In addition to her immediate family, Susan is survived by her godson Stewart D. Scannell of Massachusetts; her aunt Gail Macbeth of Avon; along with many cousins, whom she loved and enjoyed immensely; and her friends who were very special to her. Susan is predeceased by her mother Alice H. O’Connell.

Due to COVID-19, there will not be a Celebration of Life for her at this time. The family will announce a place and time once arrangements can be made. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 169 Old Colchester Road, Quaker Hill, CT 06375.
