Mystic — The owner of the Candy Shop on the Mystic boardwalk has opened a fudge and chocolate shop on the other side of the building, and plans to open an ice cream shop in between in the next few weeks.

Dana Sadler recently opened Kenzie’s Fudge & Chocolate Shop — named for her daughter — at 10 Cottrell St.

“We always wanted to expand, and when this became available, we scooped it right up and decided to go into fudge,” Sadler said. “We actually have a lot of people who ask for fudge, and homemade fudge, and it just goes hand in hand with candy.”

The fudge is made on-premises at Kenzie’s, with flavors such as cookies and cream, peanut butter, birthday cake, rocky road, and dark caramel sea salt. And the store offers free tastes.

The Candy Shop specializes in nostalgic candy, which customers scoop into bags, but has not sold fudge. Another offering that is specific to Kenzie’s is caramel apples, which can come dipped in M&Ms, pecan turtles or nuts.

Other options at Kenzie’s include Oreos, pretzels, potato chips and graham crackers that are dipped in chocolate, as well as rice marshmallow treats from The Crispery and large peppermint patties.

Unlike the Candy Shop, Kenzie’s will be open yearround. Sadler opened the Candy Shop seven years ago, and she generally opens with the Mystic Irish Parade in March and closes after the boat parade in November — though the pandemic canceled both last year.

Sadler said Kenzie’s will be open seven days a week. But she’s still trying to hire people for full- and part-time positions, and the store is currently open Thursday through Sunday from roughly 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
