Mary E. Dickson

Groton — Mary Elizabeth (O’Mara) Dickson, 90, of Smith Street, died March 23, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

She was born Aug. 19, 1930, in Lewistown, Pa., a daughter of the late Edward J. and Elizabeth (Hagerty) O’Mara.

On Nov. 27, 1952, at Sacred Heart Church in Groton, she married Richard H. Dickson. Mr. Dickson died in 2009.

She attended Groton schools and was a graduate of Robert E. Fitch High School, Class of 1948. She worked as a legal secretary for 33 years. She was a member of the National, State and Local chapter of the Legal Secretaries Association, serving as Secretary, Vice President, and President of the New London County LSA. In 1985, she was honored as legal secretary of the year by the Connecticut Association of Legal Secretaries.

Mrs. Dickson was a former member of the Ser-Hos Club of the YMCA in New London, a club organized in 1949, to provide dances, coffee hours, and entertainment for servicemen stationed in the Groton-New London area, and served as Recording Secretary and held various other positions.

She met the love of her life, Dick, at a weekly dance at Dealey Center in 1949, while he was stationed at the Submarine Base.

She is survived by her sister, Rita Lucky of Cabool, Mo.; and her five children, Susan of Omaha, Neb.; Richard H. Jr. (Cheryl) of Noank; Thomas of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; Stephen (Makonny) of Faroe Islands, Denmark; and Christine of Groton. She is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband; her sister Ann E. Cremins; and brother Lawrence K. O’Mara predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Sacred Heart Church in Groton. Interment follows at Colonel Ledyard Cemetery, Groton.
