Around the Region

• East Lyme's Vann Moffett, a graduate student at Stony Brook University, broke his own program record in the 5,000 meters while recently running in the North Carolina State Raleigh Relays. He finished the race in 13 minutes, 58.51 seconds, beating his previous mark of 14:07.32 set in 2019. Moffett also set another school record, this time in the 3,000, at the Ocean State Invitation­al in Providence. He won the race in 8:02.23, eight seconds better than his previous best.

• Grove City junior midfielder Michael LaForte, a Waterford graduate, was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week in men's lacrosse after piling up a conference record 11 points in a 27-5 rout of Chatham. He had five goals and six assists. Overall, LaForte has 17 goals and a team-high 19 assists through six games.

• Three former Eastern Connecticu­t Conference players are members of the Lasell baseball team. Senior infielder Wyatt Sihvonen (Lyman Memorial) has started all 18 games, scoring a team-best 11 runs, while freshman Riley Burke (NFA) is a reserve catcher and freshman pitcher Tyler Perkins (Ledyard) has appeared in four games, starting two.

• East Lyme's Alexandra Rose made 14 saves in Endicott's 17-4 win over Western New England in women's lacrosse action. She was named Commonweal­th Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

• UConn redshirt freshman Kevin Ferrer, a Stonington graduate, is riding a hot streak for the baseball team. He's hit in six straight games, going 10 for 21 with six RBI. Overall, he's batting .322 and has 15 RBI in 17 games for the Huskies (16-12), who've won seven straight.

• Griswold graduate Max Gregory, a junior outfielder, has the second-best batting average (.353) on the Western Connecticu­t State University baseball team.

• Josh Vincent, a senior pitcher from New London, has posted a win in all four of his appearance­s, including three starts, for the Eastern Connecticu­t State University baseball team. He's 4-0 with a 0.36 earned run average. He's allowed 16 hits, struck out 29 and walked 11 in 24.2 innings for the Warriors (15-2).

• Sophomore Mackenzie Shrewsbury, an NFA graduate, has three goals and three assists in 10 games playing for the ECSU women's lacrosse team.

• ECSU's Cassie Woods of Mystic was named Little East Conference Player of the Week in softball for the second straight week after going 6 for 7 in two games for the seventh-ranked Warriors. Woods leads the conference in hitting (.556), runs (30) and hits (31).

• Adam Kirsch, a sophomore from New London, is a starting pitcher for the Fitchburg State baseball team.

• Rhode Island College sophomore Julie Vincent, an NFA graduate, has hit safely in six of eight softball games this season, batting .375.

• Senior Abigail Horner and junior Taya Valdez, both East Lyme graduates, are two of the top scorers for the Saint Joseph women's lacrosse team. In three games, Horner has four goals and a teamhigh four assists while Valdez has seven goals.

• Cam Whalen, a junior from Stonington, helped the Central Connecticu­t State University men's track team place first at the Vermont Quad Meet in Burlington on Saturday. Whalen won both the 110 hurdles (15.59) and 400 hurdles.

Tracking the Bears

• Four Coast Guard Academy athletes earned a spot on the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference weekly honor roll. Junior midfielder Katherine Pittman was honored after scoring a career-high tying four goals and adding an assist in a women's lacrosse win over Clark while sophomore goalie Dan Lucas was selected after making a career-best 16 saves in a 19-12 men's lacrosse win over Clark. Sophomore Michelle Kwafo was recognized for winning the 100 meters (13.09 seconds), 100 hurdles (16.33) and running a leg on the school-record setting 4x100 relay team that finished in 50.32 in a home tri-meet. Sophomore Tanner Johannsen won the high jump (6feet) and took third in the triple jump (42-11.75) in a home tri-meet.

Mariners riding a wave

• The Mitchell College baseball team has run into some tough luck lately. The Mariners (7-4) have had eight straight games either postponed or canceled for pandemic-19 related reasons. They haven't played since March 27 when they lost to Trinity 6-4. Jeremy Sagun, a senior from Montville, is batting .385 and also has 13 RBI while senior Steve Cochrane (.342, 10 RBI) and Montville's Dougie Dela Cruz, a junior outfielder, (.316, two home runs, a team-best 15 RBI) also are providing some productive at-bats. Senior right-hander Roland Thivierge has a team-best three wins.
