CGA women second in NEWMAC track meet
— Coast Guard Academy had five athletes win championships at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's track and field championships on Saturday.
WPI won the meet with 238 points and Coast Guard was second (130).
Karagan Bulger won the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.17), Madison Garrigus the pole vault (10 feet, 11.75 inches), Mia Huncharek the 5,000 (18:41.53), Leilani Salang the discus (137-8) and Emma Sims the 10,000 (40:23.75).
The Bears had three second-place finishers — Savannah Olyniec (5,000, 19:03.99), Maeve Roach (1,500, 4:47.20) and Salang (hammer, 162-2).
Kalea Salang was third in both the discus (120-6) and hammer (140-3) and Kelly Wade, Elise Birkhaeuser, Hannah Jamison and Bulger finished third in the 4x100 (36-5.5) for Coast Guard. Its other third place finishers were Rachel Bubeck (400, 1:10.37), Sadie Olson (shot put, 36-5.5) and Kalea Salang (discus, 120-6).
Baseball
• Montville's Dougie DelaCruz picked up his 100th career RBI in just his 75th game in the second game of Mitchell's 5-0, 6-3 doubleheader sweep of Elms to remain in first place in the New England Collegiate Conference. Hunter Yaworski had a double and a home run with two RBI and a run in the second game for the Mariners (19-6, 12-2) while DelaCruz had a double, two RBI and a run, Anthony Diaz singled and scored twice and New London's Lelo Martinez had two hits and scored.
Jakari Pellegrini pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts for Mitchell in the first game. Matt Falk had two hits, including a double, with two runs and an RBI and Montville's Jeremy Sagun had two hits, a run and an RBI in the opener.
• Ben Casparius allowed just two hits over seven innings with 14 strikeouts and an earned run as UConn downed Bucknell, 9-1. Pat Winkel had two hits, including a solo home run, with two runs and two RBI for UConn (19-14) and Chris Winkel had two hits, including a solo home run, with two runs and an RBI. Chris Brown added two hits, two runs and two RBI.
Men's lacrosse
• Jared Rainville had a goal and four assists as Connecticut College edged Bates, 13-12, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Nick Farnham had three goals and an assist for Conn (3-3, 1-2) and Waterford's Logan Bowdish added two goals and an assist. Also, Gus Mazzocca scored three times, Patrick Linehan had two goals and Will Rice had 11 saves.
Men's tennis
• Babson edged Coast Guard, 5-4, in a NEWMAC matchup. Myles Decoste and Sean Dreher won at number two and four singles, respectively, for Coast Guard (3-3, 3-1) and the teams of Kyle Fager and Charles Norman and Decoste and Dreher won at doubles.
Women's rowing
• Conn College finished fourth in the NESCAC East Championships in Malden, Mass. The Camels lost to top-seeded Bates in their first varsity eight race of the day, then were defeated by Tufts in the consolation race. The team was piloted by freshman coxswain Emma Lanahan.
