Gail Stevens
Mystic — Gail (Monson) Stevens, 81, a resident of StoneRidge in Mystic, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, at home following an extended illness.
Born in Woodland, Maine, her elementary, junior, and high school years were spent in Caribou, Maine. She represented Caribou in Girl’s State. She was an excellent student and graduated in the top 10 in her class. She went to Colby College on scholarship. In the end she took a civil service test and headed to Washington, D.C. Gail worked as a secretary for the Department of Defense at the Pentagon. It was in nearby Arlington, where she met her husband, Charles Hiram Stevens, aka “Hi.” Gail and Hi recently celebrated their 61st anniversary.
After marriage, Gail was dedicated to raising her family through multiple locations as Hi took U.S. Army postings around the country. She was always involved in the social life of the community in which she lived. Gail was a passionate collector of different items, including anything mushroom, mirrors, tea pots and clocks. She spent many Saturdays throughout her life visiting garage sales to find antiques which caught her eye. In addition to collecting, Gail was an avid bowler. She loved flowers especially orchids that she carefully tended.
In addition to her husband, Hi, she leaves a son, Craig Stevens, of Mesa, Ariz.; daughter Shanon Stevens of New London; and five grandchildren: Christopher and Taylor Stevens, Bonnie Anderson and August and Samuel Pimentel. She was predeceased by a brother, Maurice Clifford Monson Jr.
Gail’s services and burial will be held privately at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown. At a later date, a memorial will be held at StoneRidge.
