New London — It is with great sadness to announce the passing of George T. Phillips (better known by his baptismal name, Phillip) Jan. 27, 2022. Phillip was son to James and Mary Phillips of Argalasti, Greece, born Oct. 17, 1931, in Derby. He resided and attended school in New London.

Phillip was a proud U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War and a member of the VFW. He had a long career at Pfizer from which he retired in 1989. Phillip married the love of his life, Irene, in 1975. Together they enjoyed a good life of travel and time spent with family.

Phillip was a devoted husband to his surviving widow, Irene Phillips. He is survived by his children, daughter Dorothy Vamvakides and husband Nick and son Carl Speaks and wife Donna. Phillip was a beloved papou (grandfathe­r) to his six grandchild­ren: Kirk, Phillip and Chris Vamvakides and Shanna, Justin and Sonya Speaks; and nine great-grandchild­ren. He is also survived by brother Nick and wife Georgia Fillipou of Rhode Island; and brother Peter Phillips of Greece. Siblings, Alexandra Botchis, Serago Marianou and Georgios Fillippou predecease­d him.

Phillip was an extremely kind and gentle man who will be remembered with great fondness and cherished memories by all lucky to have known him. His selflessne­ss and unconditio­nal love will be deeply missed most of all.

Phillip was a lifelong member of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church. If you wish to honor his memory, we ask kindly that donations be made to St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead St., New London, CT 06320 in his name.

Funeral services and burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery were private due to COVID concerns. There will be a memorial service July 31, 2022, at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church. Byles Memorial
