No. 9 CGA wrestlers keep rolling

New York — Coast Guard Academy's ninth-ranked wrestling team swept a tri-match at New York University on Saturday, beating the host Violets 49-3 and Bridgewate­r State 39-10.

Liam Logue (133 pounds), Devin Woodworth (157) and Kenny Marra (184) all won by pin for the Bears (6-1) in the opener against Bridgewate­r State, while Montville's Noah Caskey (149) and Steven Rochard (165) won by tech fall, AJ Pagliarulo (141) and Coy Spooner (197) earned major decisions and David McCullough won by decision.

Caden Mareno (141) recorded the only pin against NYU with Paul Detwiler (184) earning a major decision, Chase Randall (133), Tony Ulaszek (149), Phil Rogers (165) and Spooner (197) each winning by decision and McCullough by injury default.

Men's basketball

• Alex Cho scored 24 points as MIT defeated Coast Guard 91-71 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Tyler Perez a double-double — 10 points, 10 rebounds — for the Bears (514, 2-8) while Garrett Drummond scored 18 points and Jarrod Jackson and Declan Rooney finished with 13 apiece. MIT is 12-8, 5-5.

• Zach Mihok had 26 points and six rebounds to lead UConn Avery Point to a 67-62 win over Springfiel­d Tech in a Region XXI game. C.J. Mattson added 14 points, including four 3-pointers, for the Pointers (4-9, 4-7) while Nolan Molkenthin had 11 points and seven rebounds and Justice Farris had eight points and 11 rebounds.

• Jamal Allen made seven 3-pointers and scored 42 points as New England College routed Mitchell College 109-87 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Robert Zirlis led the Mariners (119, 1-1) with 19 points while Mikey Buscetto had a double-double (10

points, 14 assists) and Alfonzo Stokes had 16 points.

Men's indoor track

• Coast Guard won its own CGA Winter Invite and in the process secured the Superinten­dents' Trophy for the eighth straight year against Merchant Marine. The Bears finished with 156 followed by ECSU (126.5) and Merchant Marine (72). Coast Guard picked up wins from Kyle Boe in the 5,000-meter race (15:38.64), Michael Samson in the mile (4:23.89), David Loomis in the 800 (1:59.85), John Buchert in the weight throw (55 feet, 1.5 inches), Tanner Johannsen in the high jump (6-1.25), Antonio Rivera in the shot put (57-9.75) and the 4x800 relay team of Loomis, Brian Green, Ryan Weston and Samson (8:14.71).

• Conn College's Jeffrey Love won the 5,000-meter race in a personal best of 14:33.41 at the Tufts Cupid Challenge. Matt Carter added a second in the 3,000 while Chris Koskinen (pole vault) and Ben Vazquez (800) each placed third.

Women's indoor track

• Coast Guard finished with 189 points to easily win its own CGA Winter Invite. The Bears won nine events with Megan Churm in the 5k (career best 18:30.38), Hope Shales in the mile at (5:20.71), Taylor Winters in the 800 (2:25.52), Kelly Wade in the long jump (16-6), Madelynn Greene in the triple jump (34-9.75), Madison Garrigus in the pole vault (11-7), Sadie Olson in the shot put (36-3.5), the 4x400 relay of Wade, Greene, Hannah Jamison and Allison Osborn (4:22.51) and the 4x800 team of Winters, Sophia White, Riley Thorburn and Emma Hupp (9:59.52).

• Conn College's Erica MacSweeney captured the two-day pentathlon at the Tufts Cupid Challenge in Medford, Mass. The junior finished with 2,874 points, including wins in the long jump (4.96 meters) and 800-meter race (2:30.56). She was third in the 60 hurdles and high jump and fourth in the shot put. Also for Conn, Malissa Lindsey won the 60 dash in a school record 7.78 seconds while Lauren Hino was fourth in the 5,000 (18:50.70).

Men's hockey

• Ryan Tverberg scored a breakaway with 4:17 remaining as UConn upset No. 17 Providence 2-1 in a Hockey East game on Friday night in Hartford. Tverberg also assisted on John Spetz's goal in the second period for the Huskies (13-11, 9-6), who won their third straight conference game. Providence is 17-11-2, 8-9-1.
