UConn blanks Hoyas in Big East tourney opener

Mason, Ohio — Top seed UConn won its opener in the Big East Conference baseball tournament on Thursday, beating No. 4 Georgetown 4-0.

Georgetown swept the Huskies in a three-game series last weekend.

UConn (44-13) will have to wait until Saturday to play again because the second game between No. 2 Creighton and No. 3 Xavier was rained out. The Huskies will play the winner of that game in the winners' bracket final on Saturday.

Austin Peterson pitched seven innings for the win, striking out eight with four walks and allowing four hits.

H.S. softball

• New London closed out its season with a 7-0 win over Tourtellot­te in an ECC Division IV game. Alina Skrabacz pitched a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and one walk. Cassandra Roman was 4-for-4 with three doubles and a triple for the Whalers (216, 2-6). Italia Smalls drove in three runs, Gabriela Santiago scored twice and Skrabacz drove in two runs.

• North Branford, the No. 5 seed, won its seventh straight Shoreline Conference tournament title, beating No. 3 Old Lyme 7-2. Three players from Old Lyme (17-6) were named to the Shoreline Conference all-star team as first-team selections: Victoria Gage, Emma Bayor and Ava Roth. Old Lyme senior Madison Hubbard received honorable mention.

H.S. boys' golf

• Old Lyme beat Old Saybrook 185190 in a Shoreline Conference match. Pat Flanagan of Old Lyme (79, 7-9) was the medalist with a 38.

• Stonington beat East Lyme 5-2 in a match with a three-way tie for medalist. Brandon Tavares of Stonington and East Lyme's Tyler Moore and Jack Bucko each shot a 39, with Tavares and Moore halving the No. 1 match. Drew Johnson won his match for Stonington (10-6) and teammate Ethan Torres tied with Pat Kelly of East Lyme (10-10).

• Fitch beat Bacon Academy 5-2. Nate McCormack and Jack Kramer of the Falcons shared medalist honors at 38 with Bacon's Wilson Hathaway. Elliot Reese won his match for Fitch (10-7) and Kramer and Luke Noreika halved matches. Ryan Claffey won his match for Bacon (6-9).

Sea Unicorns win opener

• Johnny Knox (Nichols) drove in three runs and scored three runs as the Norwich Sea Unicorns beat the New Britain Bees 11-5 in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League season opener. Jackson Ferrigno (UConn) had three hits, Zac Lyons (Bryant) was 2-for-2 with three RBI and Waterford's Connor Podeszwa (Tufts) was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

H.S. track

• Old Lyme had a pair of champions at Wednesday's Shoreline Conference boys' meet. Jacob Volkerts won the 100 meters (11.47) and Dylan Sheehan won the discus (1502). Sheehan was also second in the shot put and teammate Drew St. Louis finished second in the javelin. In the girls' meet, Old Lyme got a second place from Gesami Vasquez in the 3,200.
