Conn. state police: 1,970 calls, 109 crashes, no deaths on first day of Memorial Day weekend

Connecticu­t State Police said they responded to 109 crashes across the state Friday, the first day of the Memorial Day weekend, treating seven injured people.

There were no fatalities reported on the state’s roads on Friday, state police said.

Troopers released enforcemen­t statistics for Friday, noting they were “reflective of the time period beginning at midnight and ending at 11:59 p.m.”

“The Connecticu­t State Police had 1,970 calls for service, assisted 156 motorists, responded to 109 accidents with no reported fatalities, made 10 DUI arrests, issued 154 citations for speeding and 69 seat belt citations,” a statement said. “We issued 113 citations for hazardous moving violations (to include: unsafe lane change, following too closely, move over, etc.).”

Throughout 2021’s Memorial Day weekend of enhanced state police enforcemen­t, there were 5,636 calls for service, according to past reporting. State police said troopers issued 939 total violations during the period, including 379 for speeding and 64 for seat belt infraction­s.

During Memorial Day weekend enforcemen­t in 2020, there were 7,963 calls for service and 2,017 violations, including 983 for speeding and 39 for seat belt violations, according to state police.

Last year there were 377 accidents investigat­ed on state roads and highways — 56 of which involved injuries, and one with a fatality. In 2020, there were 175 accidents investigat­ed.

Troopers made 30 driving under the influence arrests during the holiday weekend in 2021, state police said. That number was down three from 2020.
