Florence Mullane

-

North Stonington — On Sunday, April 24, 2022, Florence “Flo” Mullane passed away peacefully at home at the age of 78, surrounded by family and loved ones. Florence was born August 25, 1943, in New London, to Joseph Apicelli and Helen Migliaccio Apicelli. On April 4, 1964, she married Nicholas H. Mullane II, and they raised a daughter, Jennifer, and twin sons, Patrick and Christian. Florence and Nicholas have lived at their home in North Stonington, since 1970.

Growing up, Florence worked in her family restaurant, Appy’s on Thames

Street, in Groton, and then as a secretary before staying home to raise her three children.

She was an avid volunteer in the North Stonington school system, including in the home economics classroom and sports boosters. She was also an officer of the North Stonington Grange, where she helped manage and operate the food booths, craft tent and ticket gates for the North Stonington Fair and other events.

Florence was a very skilled crafter and sewer and was well known for her intricate quilts, most of which she gave to friends and family or donated. She most enjoyed spending time in her flower and vegetable gardens. Summertime visitors weren’t allowed to leave without a basketful of fresh-picked vegetables. She loved watching the dozens of hummingbirds that would gather at her birdfeeders every day during the spring and summer.

Florence was preceded in her death by her father Joseph; her mother Helen; and her brother Richard. She is survived by her husband Nicholas; siblings, Arlene, Susie and Marjorie, her three children; and three grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton. Please visit www.byles.com to sign the online register or to share a memory.
